Aaron Cook, Laz Diaz keep Orioles hitless (O's win 5-3)

Red Sox starter Aaron Cook has allowed one baserunner through four innings tonight, and it came on a leadoff walk to Nick Markakis in the bottom of the fourth. That's it. Cook and Miguel Gonzalez were working on dueling shutouts before Jacoby Ellsbury's ground-rule double scored Scott Podsednik in the fifth. Nick Punto, who followed Podsednik's single with one of his own, scored on Carl Crawford' sacrifice fly to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Ellsbury has a 38-game hitting streak against the Orioles dating back to April 17, 2009. Gonzalez has allowed more runs tonight than in his last two starts combined. Adam Jones appeared to break up Cook's no-hitter and shutout with two outs in the fourth on a slow ground ball to shortstop Mike Aviles, but first base umpire Laz Diaz ruled that the throw beat him. Replays disputed that call. The Orioles have gotten one ball out of the infield in four innings. Down on the farm, first baseman Joe Mahoney isn't in Triple-A Norfolk's lineup tonight and he could be summoned to Baltimore if Wilson Betemit goes on the disabled list tomorrow. Betemit has an MRI scheduled at 11 a.m. to determine the cause of the soreness in his right wrist. Mahoney is a left-handed hitter and he's on the 40-man roster, so he's an obvious replacement. Mahoney is batting .263/.317/.390 with 27 doubles, one triple, nine homers and 53 RBIs in 116 games. He's hitting .209 in his last 10 games. Update: So much for Cook's no-hitter. And his shutout. The Orioles sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth and scored five times. The Red Sox used four pitchers. The game completely turned around. J.J. Hardy followed Markakis' one-out walk with a single into left field for the Orioles' first hit. Nate McLouth singled to score Markakis, and Hardy raced home on Cook's throwing error on a potential double play ball from Jones. Matt Wieters' ground-rule double gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead and forced Cook out of the game. Mark Reynolds doubled off Junichi Tazawa - the third Red Sox pitcher - to bring home two more runs. Reynolds has seven RBIs in his last three games and nine in his last seven. J.C. Romero has replaced Gonzalez, who allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 94 pitches, 68 for strikes. Update II: Romero gave up an unearned run in the seventh after committing a throwing error. Should it be an earned run if it's the pitcher's error? Luis Ayala stranded a runner to end the inning. He's now let 18 of 33 inherited runners score. Brian Matusz made his first relief appearance tonight at Norfolk, entering in the seventh inning and allowing one run and two hits, walking a batter and striking out three - including former Orioles outfielder Felix Pie. Terry Tiffee had an RBI single. Matusz's fastball touched 94 mph, according to a Tides tweet. Update III: The Orioles win, 5-3, and move 11 games above .500 for the first time since June 18. Jim Johnson earned his 35th save in 38 chances, and the Orioles took over sole possession of second place in the American League East. They also lead the wild card race. The game ended with Manny Machado's diving backhanded catch. He's been good at third base. The Orioles are 49-0 when leading after the seventh inning and 51-1 when leading after the eighth.
