Nationals manager Davey Martinez said that he expects that right-hander Wander Suero will remain in the suspended game against the Yankees to pitch the top of the seventh. The game resumes in a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning at 5:05 p.m. on MASN.
"Suero is still in the game," Martinez said. "When the game starts, we will see where we are at. Hopefully, we score a couple of runs and then things will change. But he's still in the game.
"We will have guys warming up. Depending on, like I said, if we score some runs we might change it up. I like Suero where he is at right now."
The Nats are up first to restart the suspended game from May 15 with Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Matt Adams due in the bottom of the sixth. But Adams is dealing with an injured finger and will be a gametime decision.
"He's going to see if he can swing," Martinez said. "It's bruised pretty good. He's still a little sore, but we'll see what happens. He's getting better, but still got hit by a pretty good pitch on the finger."
Howie Kendrick was up after Adams in the May 15 contest, but because Kendrick is lost for the season and Adams also likely to miss tonight's games, Martinez will have four left-handed bats to choose from as substitutes. He also has to replace center fielder Andrew Stevenson, who has been demoted to Triple-A Syracuse since the game was suspended. Martinez has Michael A. Taylor and Spencer Kieboom available from the right side and switch-hitting infielder Wilmer Difo.
Martinez has been a part of a suspended game before: "It's weird. The last time this happened to me was the World Series. So we played a three-game World Series in 2008."
Game 5 was tied at 2-2 in the sixth. The Phillies won that game and went on to win the Fall Classic, four games to one over the Rays.
"We have to submit a lineup card and then we just play the game," Martinez said. "Our focus is to win that first suspended game. That's where we are at right now. And then we'll worry about the second game when we get there."
Martinez said right-hander Austin Voth is available as the 26th man for the makeup of the postponed game tonight, which will begin 30 minutes after the suspended game is completed. That also might mean that if Voth is not put it to the game tonight, he might be a candidate to start Tuesday's home game against the Orioles.
