When the Orioles picked up Alexi Casilla off waivers from Minnesota in November he was a player that added some infield depth who could also be a second base option if Brian Roberts needed to start the season on the disabled list.
Well, Roberts was placed on the DL today, after the third game, and Casilla, one of the club's backup plans, now could get more playing time while Roberts is out. Ryan Flaherty is starting this afternoon, but Casilla said he's ready for anything the club needs.
"That was a sad situation," Casilla of Roberts getting injured in the ninth inning Thursday. "The whole dugout, when that happened, everyone was shocked. He's a good player, but that is why I am here. They signed me just in case.
"He's been through a lot the last couple years. He's a good guy and teammate. The short time I have known him, he's amazing. He's one of the best out there. I hope he can get back quick, we need him here."
Casilla was the Twins' opening day second baseman in Baltimore last April and hit .241 with one homer and 30 RBIs in 106 games with Minnesota. He brings a base stealing threat to the team. He was successful on 21 of 22 attempts last year to rank second in the majors in stolen base percentage. He is 36-for-40 over the last two seasons for a 90 percent success rate. Last season's AL leader in steals, the Angels' Mike Trout, stole 49 last year on a 91 percent success rate.
"Everyone knows what I can do. I'm ready for whatever Buck (Showalter) needs. I can play short, second, even third. I've even played a few innings in the outfield. I'm ready for anything. I just want to help the team. I'm ready," he said.
Casilla has experience playing alongside J.J. Hardy in the infield when they were Twins teammates in 2010. This morning, Casilla was reminded that he may be playing against the team that cut him loose at some point over the next three days.
"That's right, we are facing the Twins. Great. Sweet. Sweet potatoes," Casilla said with a laugh.
