All-Star voting: Jones a long shot for starting lineup

Two Orioles players have consistently led at their respective positions in the 2014 All-Star voting. As for the rest, well, they are running out of time.

With less than two weeks remaining in online All-Star voting, Nelson Cruz is still leading at designated hitter, and Matt Wieters stands atop the leaderboard among American League catchers.

Cruz is tied for first in the majors with 23 home runs, and has collected 2,457,349 votes. He holds about an 800,000-vote lead over the Red Sox's David Ortiz, and is aiming for his first ever fan-selected starting assignment. The game will be played Tuesday, July 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Despite undergoing Tommy John surgery last week, Wieters has amassed 1,852,770 votes and leads the A's Derek Norris (1,486,850 votes), the Yankees' Brian McCann (1,344,076) and the Twins' Kurt Suzuki (812,865). Wieters will obviously be unable to compete in the contest, but was hitting .308/.339/.500 before his injury.

Adam Jones has a somewhat realistic shot at cracking the top three among AL outfielders, but it may be a stretch. He's collected 1,490,000 votes and has been on a tear in June hitting .316/.354/.632 with seven homers, 16 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

However, those numbers will have to gain some recognition as he sits behind the Blue Jays' Jose Bautista (3,665,208), the Angels' Mike Trout (3,286,511), Toronto's Melky Cabrera (1,674,232) and the A's Yoenis Cespedes (1,511,838).

Manny Machado, Nick Markakis and Chris Davis all moved up in their position groups, but it is unlikely that any will be making a push for a starting gig on July 15. Machado sits in third among AL third basemen with 1,182,048 votes, but trails the A's Josh Donaldson (2,436,771) and the Rangers' Adrian Beltre (1,346,957). Markakis jumped from No. 10 to No. 8 in the most recent rankings, and Davis moved to No. 3 at first base. Davis sits behind the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera by over a million votes and the White Sox's Jose Abreu by about 400,000. J.J. Hardy remained in third among AL shortstops with 1,259,268 votes

Voters will have the opportunity to elect their favorite starting players up to 25 times at MLB.com until Thursday, July 3 at 11:59 p.m. The 2014 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show will be held during the weekend of July 5-6.
