Another error leads to another run (O's lose 3-0)

Rookie left fielder Xavier Avery misplayed Mark Trumbo's single leading off the fourth inning tonight for the Orioles' 75th error this season, tops in the majors. It came back to bite them. Trumbo moved to third on Alberto Callaspo's fly ball and scored on Howie Kendrick's single through a drawn-in infield to give the Angels a 1-0 lead against starter Jason Hammel. The defense wasn't done complicating Hammel's inning. Erick Aybar, who reached on a force play, went from first to third on Bobby Wilson's single because Wilson Betemit didn't cover the bag after making a diving attempt on the ball. Shortstop J.J. Hardy couldn't get there in time. That's not an error, but it goes down as BC-5 - brain cramp on the third baseman. Hammel didn't allow another run, but he's now up to 68 pitches in four innings. Jared Weaver is shutting out the Orioles on two hits, including Betemit's double. Down on the farm, left-hander Zach Britton picked up the win tonight for Triple-A Norfolk after allowing four runs and eight hits in eight innings. He walked two, struck out three, threw a wild pitch and committed an error. He threw 103 pitches, 66 for strikes. Left fielder L.J. Hoes extended his hitting streak to 18 games, the longest at Norfolk since Oscar Salazar hit in 18 straight in 2009. Hoes had his second consecutive three-hit game, which included a double, three RBIs, a walk and three runs scored. Hoes, the youngest position player in the International League at 22, is 31-for-69 with 11 RBIs and 16 runs scored during the streak and has raised his average from .177 to .321. I'm told he's also been impressive defensively. Be sure to check Steve Melewski's blog on MASNsports.com for news on Nick Markakis' first injury-rehab game at Double-A Bowie. Markakis homered twice in his first action since undergoing surgery to remove a piece of broken hamate bone in his right wrist. Markakis also is expected to play Sunday and Monday at Bowie. Update: Hammel is in danger of losing his third consecutive start. He allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings, the last two scoring with two outs in the seventh inning on Torii Hunter's RBI double and Kendry Morales' RBI single. It goes down as a quality start for Hammel, who needed to be perfect tonight with Weaver shutting out the Orioles on three hits. Chris Tillman allowed two unearned runs in 8 1/3 innings on Wednesday. Miguel Gonzalez allowed one run in seven innings last night. Hammel held the Angels to one run through six innings tonight before those two-out hits in the seventh drove him from the game.
