Another look at 40-man roster and arbitration-eligibles (with FanFest note)

Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette didn't bite yesterday when I asked whether he's attempted to re-sign any of his pending free agents before they hit the open market.

"We're working on our offseason plans," he replied.

That's a pretty broad brush.

We'll find out whether Duquette can get the coaches under contract for 2016. There's a growing sense, as I wrote yesterday, that they may only go six for seven.

It speaks volumes that the coaches are in demand. They're viewed within the industry as comprising a quality staff, and word of expiring contracts spreads quickly.

A reader asked me yesterday whether former hitting coach Jim Presley remains in the organization? Presley was reassigned on Nov. 24, 2014 for personal reasons and no longer is associated with the club.

There was talk of offering Presley a scouting position, but it didn't happen.

Part of the Orioles' offseason discussions center on the 40-man roster and which players are expendable to add other pieces. They figure to keep a spot open prior to the Rule 5 draft at the Winter Meetings, which are held Dec. 7-10 in Nashville.

We know that six spots could be created after the World Series by pending free agents Chris Davis, Matt Wieters, Wei-Yin Chen, Darren O'Day, Steve Pearce and Gerardo Parra.

Just for grins, let's take another glimpse at the current 40-man. It doesn't include Dylan Bundy because he's on the 60-day disabled list:

Show of hands if you forgot about Wilkins, even after I referenced him yesterday as the player whose acquisition led the Orioles to designate reliever Cesar Cabral for assignment.

Wilkins batted .264 with four doubles and nine RBIs in 21 games at Triple-A Norfolk. He had a big two-run double in the ninth inning of Game 4 in the semifinals against Columbus.

Anger over the Tommy Hunter trade will only intensify if Lake is taken off the roster. He's out of minor league options and he didn't make much of an impression in limited action, a lasting image being the ball he overran in left field.

Maybe the anger intensifies if he stays on the roster. I'm not sure how this works.

MLBTradeRumors.com has posted its salary projections for nine of the Orioles' arbitration-eligible players, with service time included. David Lough doesn't appear on the list. Take a look:

I'm surprised by the modest bump for Matusz, who made $3.2 million this season. Tillman made $4.32 million, Gonzalez $3.28 million, Britton $3.2 million, Brach $523,000 and Machado $548,000.

You need to factor in the raises when planning your budget for next season. Feel free to non-tender the guys you don't want to pay.
