Another look at a great pitching performance

For 24-year-old right-hander Dylan Bundy, it was his 39th career major league start. But it was his best.

Minutes before Bundy would take the mound and dominate the Mariners on Tuesday night, catcher Welington Castillo could sense he might have great stuff.

"From the 'pen he had great life on the fastball," Castillo said. "So when he took the mound, it was nice and smooth. I just let the flow go, go with him. What was working for him? Everything was working. I was just calling the game with the stuff that he had today.

"He doesn't have the time in the big leagues, but he has a great idea of what he needs to do to the hitters out there. He's really smart and has an idea about how to get a hitter out."

Dylan-Bundy-throwing-black-Sidebar.jpgThat was on display all night as Bundy pitched a complete-game one-hitter with a career-high 12 strikeouts. In five August starts, Bundy is 4-0 with an ERA of 2.00 and a .177 average against. Over 36 innings, he has allowed 23 hits with six walks and 45 strikeouts.

Consider this stat: Bundy has fanned 10 or more three times in his last four games. The rest of the Orioles starters have two games of 10 or more strikeouts this year in 107 games. Wade Miley and Ubaldo Jiménez have one game each.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Bundy's three starts this month with 10-plus strikeouts is more than any other O's pitcher has total over the last 10 years.

Since the All-Star break the Orioles are 7-0 in Bundy's starts and he is 5-0 with a 3.04 ERA. Bundy has 18 quality starts in 25 outings on the year, including five in a row. He has allowed two runs or less 13 times.

He truly had swing-and-miss stuff last night, getting 22 swings-and-misses on 116 pitches. He had 10 swings-and-misses on 27 sliders. Bundy has five starts this year where he has gotten 16 or more swings-and-misses and four of the five have come this month.

Yep, he's rolling.

Last night's game was just the second in Orioles history where a pitcher recorded a one-hit shutout with 12 or more strikeouts. Mike Mussina fanned 15 Twins on Aug. 1, 2000. That night and last night. That's it.

Pretty special night at Oriole Park.

The Orioles have now won six in a row to tie their season high. They remain 1 ½ games back of Minnesota for the second American League wild card. They have moved to within four games of the second-place Yankees, the team that currently holds the first AL wild card.

This afternoon, as they look for a seventh consecutive win, they also look for their first three-game home sweep of Seattle since Aug. 6-8, 2012.

Bowie closes in: The Double-A Bowie Baysox can clinch their second Eastern League playoff berth in three years tonight. They have a magic number of one to clinch and could do so at home with a win over Trenton.

The Baysox are one game out of first but the top two clubs in each division get in and Bowie is on the doorstep of the postseason.

Bowie beat Trenton last night 8-3 as Ryan Mountcastle doubled, homered and tied his career high with four RBIs. Garabez Rosa had two doubles among his three hits and Steve Wilkerson added a two-run single.
