Another night, another loss: O's routed 11-2 by Tampa Bay

During an awful stretch of baseball in which the Orioles' offense and pitching have both struggled, the O's saw both trends continue tonight. Chris Tillman allowed seven runs over 4 2/3 innings as the Tampa Bay Rays routed the Orioles 11-2 at Camden Yards.

At least the pregame ceremonies involving Cal Ripken Jr. were entertaining because that all changed once the game started.

In losing for the sixth time in a row and 12th time in the past 13 games, the Orioles fall to 63-69. That ties the season-worst mark of falling six games under .500 at 23-29. With 30 games remaining in the 2015 season, the Orioles now need to go 19-11 to have a winning record.

Manny Machado's bloop double in the third inning was the 100th of his career. He became the youngest Oriole ever to record 100 doubles, surpassing Ripken. Machado achieved the milestone at 23 years, 57 days old.

Tampa Bay catcher J.P. Arencibia, who was with the Orioles in spring training, drove in six runs tonight. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of two-run singles and a two-run homer in the seventh. It was his first homer since Sept. 17, 2014, and the six RBIs are one off his career high.

Rays pitcher Drew Smyly allowed just four hits over seven scoreless innings to improve to 2-2 with a 3.11 ERA. He threw 100 pitches and fanned 10 with one walk. It was his fourth career 10-strikeout game.

The Rays scored four runs off Tillman in the fourth and four off Tillman and Steve Johnson in the fifth. The seven runs allowed tied Tillman's season high, set twice in April against Toronto. He falls to 0-3 with an ERA of 7.27 his last three starts, which follows a stretch where he went 7-0 over 12 starts.

The numbers are bad on O's starting pitchers. In this series, they have allowed 12 runs in 9 1/3 innings. Over the last nine games, the rotation ERA is 7.43. Over the last 32 games, it is 5.80.

Tonight is the first time the Rays held 6-0 leads in back-to-back games since July 1-2, 2013 at Houston.

The clubs will wrap up this three-game series Wednesday night before the Orioles begin a six-game road trip to Toronto and New York.
