On the stadium field, left-hander Brian Matusz shut out the Rays on two hits over three innings. He threw 41 pitches, 24 for strikes.
Asdrubal Cabrera singled with two outs in the first inning and Nick Franklin doubled with one out in the second. Franklin stole third base on a close play, but Tim Beckham struck out looking to end the inning.
Matusz didn't walk a batter and struck out three. He retired the last five Rays.
Tim Berry replaced Matusz in the fourth and served up a two-run homer to Rene Rivera to break a scoreless tie.
The Orioles are trying to improve on their 3-9 record and wake up an offense that's been scuffling for runs. Rays starter Nathan Karns has retired the first nine batters he's faced.
"I'd like to be pitching shutouts, I'd like to make every play and not make any baserunning mistakes, but I'd rather have them happen here," Showalter said. "With our guys, somebody's going to pay. You guys know it. It's a pretty professional group. They know where the finish line is.
"A lot of guys tinkering and trying new things and figuring out a way to get better. That smoke will kind of clear about somewhere around the 22nd or 25th and they'll start saying, 'OK, here's what I'm going with.'"
Is Showalter comfortable with the approach from his pitchers and hitters?
"I would never use the word 'comfortable' to describe anything about me, or us in general. You're always wanting things to be perfect. You're striving for something that's impossible."
