Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez still has a shot at a quality start today, having allowed three runs over five innings. He needs to get through the sixth unscathed.
Don't be fooled. It's been a challenge for Jimenez, who's surrendered eight hits, walked two and struck out three. He's up to 86 pitches, his command abandoning him at various points in the game.
Josh Stinson began warming in the bullpen in the fifth.
Jimenez has totaled 15 2/3 innings in three starts with the Orioles and allowed 21 hits and 11 runs, walked 10 and struck out 13. He's also served up three home runs.
The Jays broke a 1-1 tie today with two runs in the fourth, an inning that began with a leadoff walk to Adam Lind and included a double by Edwin Encarnacion, an RBI grounder by Dioner Navarro and an RBI by Jonathan Diaz on a bunt to the right side.
The pitch was almost over Diaz's head, but he still got the bunt down and padded the lead.
The ball girl positioned in foul territory in left field ranged far to her left to field Encarnacion's ball, unaware that it had been ruled fair. Imagine the embarrassment. But she isn't the first to make that mistake and she won't be the last. Cut her some slack.
Besides, she has better range than some Orioles infielders that I've covered over the years.
The Jays are making outstanding plays all over the field today. Colby Rasmus is running down everything in center. Not sure where the Orioles can hit the ball and not be robbed unless the it rattles around the seats or bounces on the flag court.
Update: Jimenez was charged with five runs in 5 1/3 innings, the last scoring on Rasmus's two-run single off Josh Stinson. Encarnacion added a two-run double off Stinson to give Toronto an 8-1 lead.
Jimenez is charged with five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3, with two walks, three strikeouts and two home runs. He threw 98 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Jimenez has made three starts for the Orioles and allowed 13 runs and 23 hits in 16 innings, with 10 walks, 13 strikeouts and four home runs.
Maybe it's just the typical slow start. He had a career 5.10 ERA in March/April before today's outing.
Update II: Chris Davis and Matt Wieters homered off Jays reliever Esmil Rogers in the bottom of the eighth inning, cutting Toronto's lead to 11-3.
It was the first home run for Davis and the third for Wieters, who leads the team. It also was the first back-to-back homers for the Orioles since Brian Roberts and Nate McLouth on Sept. 24, 2013 against the Jays.
