Arrieta optioned, Burnett designated for assignment

The Orioles made two roster moves today to accommodate pitcher Kevin Gausman, who had his contract selected from Double-A Bowie and will make his major league debut tonight in Toronto. Pitcher Jake Arrieta was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to create room on the 25-man roster, and reliever Alex Burnett was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster. Arrieta didn't pitch for the Orioles after being recalled on May 18 as an extra bullpen arm. He was a candidate to start tonight against the Blue Jays, but the Orioles chose to bring up Gausman from Bowie. Arrieta is 2-1 with a 2.75 ERA in three starts for the Tides. He's walked three and struck out 17 in 19 2/3 innings. He hasn't pitched since May 7, but is recovered from the strained right shoulder that forced him to miss his last scheduled start with Norfolk. Arrieta joins a crowded Norfolk rotation that also includes Jair Jurrjens, Zach Britton, Steve Johnson, Josh Stinson and Tsuyoshi Wada, who's on an injury-rehab assignment. Burnett, 25, made two appearances for the Orioles during three stints with them, allowing three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Burnett was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in nine appearances with Norfolk. The Orioles signed him off waivers from the Blue Jays on April 12.
