Draft update: The Orioles selected Stanford third baseman Adam Gaylord with the third overall pick in the 31st round. Gaylord, a junior, batted .232 with two doubles, one homer and nine RBIs in 31 games (eight starts). He didn't commit an error.
The Orioles chose College of Southern Nevada right-hander Joe Robinson in the 32nd round, Notre Dame right-hander Steven Mazur in the 33rd and British Columbia shortstop Samuel Starr in the 34th.
Jake Arrieta apparently has become the latest player to announce his promotion to the majors on his Facebook page.
Doesn't anyone MySpace anymore?
I heard late last night that Arrieta would be here "soon," and he's now expected to debut tomorrow night against the Yankees at Camden Yards, giving Jeremy Guthrie an extra day to rest his sore body. Guthrie would pitch on Friday and Brian Matusz would take the ball Saturday, with Brad Bergesen continuing to be available for long relief.
Interim manager Juan Samuel might have bypassed Bergesen last night in case the right-hander is needed to cover some innings tomorrow.
Arrieta would be taking his normal turn after pitching in relief Saturday. He's listed as Triple-A Norfolk's starter tomorrow night, but it looks like he'll be thrown to the Bronx wolves.
Stephen Strasburg gets the Pirates, Arrieta gets the Yankees.
Life isn't always fair.
Arrieta only threw 25 pitches on Saturday, so we know he'll be fresh. Let's hope he'll also be relaxed.
