Bats thaw out for Orioles in 5-3 win

The outburst was so unexpected and rare coming from the home team that Van Halen's "Eruption" should have provided the soundtrack. If a guitar solo is sufficient for a three-run inning.

The Orioles eliminated the no-hit drama in the fourth with Manny Machado's leadoff double and they actually worked Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada for 33 pitches while taking the lead.

Jonathan Schoop, in a 1-for-25 funk, followed with a double to tie the game, Chris Davis - booed after striking out on three pitches to end the second, lined an RBI single to the out-of-town scoreboard in right, Tim Beckham lifted a sacrifice fly and the Orioles exceeded their run total for the entire series.

The game wasn't halted and numbers weren't unveiled on the warehouse, but it felt like a celebration was in order.

Schoop delivered another run-scoring hit with the bases loaded in the fifth, Kevin Gausman made it through the sixth in the latest extended effort from the rotation and the Orioles avoided a sweep with a 5-3 victory over the Blue Jays before an announced crowd of 10,399 at Camden Yards.

(If you decided at the last minute to not purchase a ticket, way to ruin the whole round number thing.)

Schoop was 0-for-13 with seven strikeouts with runners in scoring position before tonight, and his 6-4-3 double play last night in the eighth inning kept the score tied in a game that the Orioles lost 2-1. He now has five hits this season outside of Houston, which might be a little better for a musician than a baseball player.

Davis was 3-for-38 this season before pulling a 2-2 changeup from Estrada to the wall. Estrada struck him out on three pitches, all fastballs, in the second inning and fed him more heaters in the fourth before going twice to his signature pitch.

The rally included another walk from Pedro Álvarez, his seventh in 24 plate appearances.

Estrada was done after Schoop's single into center field with none out in the fifth that scored Chance Sisco, who led off with a double. Trey Mancini walked and Machado was awarded a single after a 4 minute, 10 second review of his fly ball that fell into foul territory but also grazed the glove of right fielder Randal Grichuk on a diving attempt.

Danny Barnes inherited the bases-loaded mess and saved Estrada by striking out Adam Jones and Álvarez and retiring Davis on a fly ball to the center field warning track.

The Orioles settled for one run and a 4-2 lead.

Davis singled to left field in the seventh for his first multi-hit game since Sept. 22, 2017.

Gausman fell behind 1-0 during a 26-pitch first inning that included Kevin Pillar's RBI single with two outs. Pillar was 11-for-25 against Gausman before tonight. The right-hander has allowed six runs in the opening frame this season.

Shutdown innings were elusive again, with the Jays scoring in the top of the fifth and sixth to counter the Orioles. Aledmys Díaz hit a solo home run with two outs in the sixth to reduce the lead to 4-3, and Gausman walked Luke Maile before striking out Gift Ngoepe on his 106th pitch of the night.

The Orioles delivered another counter punch, getting an RBI single from Sisco in the bottom of the sixth after Beckham reached on an infield hit and took second on a ground ball that Ngoepe bobbled to prevent a double play.

Mancini singled in the inning after being hit on the right hand while swinging at an inside pitch from John Axford and requiring medical attention. Head athletic trainer Brian Ebel checked the strength in Mancini's hand, bent his index finger and made him take some practice swings. Mancini made a couple of throws in front of the dugout before heading to left field for the top of the seventh, but he was replaced in the ninth.

The off-day on Thursday is a timely one.

Gausman allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, with three walks and six strikeouts. His ERA is 6.60 in 15 innings.

Richard Bleier, who will pitch every day if you let him, retired the side in order in the seventh. Darren O'Day, who surrendered Curtis Granderson's go-ahead home last night, breezed through the eighth and Brad Brach recorded his third save.

He skipped the 1-2-5 double play.

The Orioles skipped the dramatics and are 5-8 after their second win at home.
