Beckham named AL Player of the Week

Tim Beckham's first six games with the Orioles earned him an award. The curtain call wasn't sufficient.

Beckham has been named the American League's Player of the Week after collecting 14 hits in his first 24 at-bats following last Monday's trade that brought him over from the Rays.

Beckham posted a .583/.600/1.167 slash line with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored to earn his first Player of the Week honor.

Among the league leaders, Beckham finished the week ranked first in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and total bases (28), tied for first in hits (14) and triples, tied for third in home runs and tied for seventh in runs scored and doubles.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Beckham became the first player to log multiple hits and runs scored in his first career game with the Orioles after previously playing for a different club that season since catcher Brook Fordyce on July 30, 2000 against the Indians.

Beckham also became the first player in the modern era (since 1900) to record 13 hits and three home runs in his first five games with a new team. He homered in three consecutive games for the first time in his four-year major league career.

As if he hadn't already done plenty, Beckham notched the 10,000th regular season home run in Orioles history with his solo shot in the eighth inning on Saturday.

The Orioles became the fourth major league team to total 10,000 home runs since 1954, joining the Yankees, Tigers and Red Sox.

Beckham will receive a watch, just as teammate Jonathan Schoop did after winning the award two weeks ago.

Earlier today, Single-A Delmarva left-hander Alex Wells was named the South Atlantic League's Player of the Month for July after going 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in five starts. He tossed 31 scoreless innings, walked none and struck out 26.
