Big news and a few small ceremonies

If the name Steve Johnson sounds familiar, you might remember reading about O's broadcaster Dave Johnson's son in an article here in the Orioles Buzz back in February. That far back, Steve Johnson's only connection to the Orioles was his father, Dave Johnson, who was nice enough to include me on emails updating Steve's progress in the Dodgers' minor league system. That connection looks like it might now extend further than mere interest in the progress of a former Oriole and MASN broadcaster's son in baseball's minor leagues. George-Sherrill.jpg As O's fans think about saying goodbye to the flat-brimmed George Sherrill, who made an Orioles save entertaining for more reasons than one, they'll welcome Dave's son Steve and fellow Dodger minor league 3B Josh Bell. For the most up-to-date info on the situation, keep checking Roch Kubatko's School of Roch blog and Steve Melewski's O's blog here on MASNsports.com. But for some background on the new Oriole who's always had orange blood, check out these previous Orioles Buzz articles with mention of Johnson's progress in the minors: Also coming up soon are two events scheduled to take place before Friday's game against the Red Sox. Promising rookie and O's outfielder Nolan Reimold will be presented with the Gillette American League Rookie of the Month Award prior to Friday's game. Reimold will collect the award for his achievements on the field in the month of June, during which he batted .420 with 3 doubles, 4 home runs, 9 RBIs, and 13 runs scored. O's manager Dave Trembley will present the young Oriole with the honor during an on-field ceremony before the game. Following Reimold's Rookie of the Month Award presentation, Maryland's Lieutenant Governor Anthony G. Brown will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The Orioles are hosting Lieutenant Governors from all 50 states in a suite during Friday's game, as the whole group will be in town for a National Lt. Governor's Conference in the Convention Center this weekend.
