Orioles reliever Richard Bleier will undergo surgery Tuesday in New Jersey to repair a Grade 3 tear in his left lat muscle. He won't pitch again this year and may not be ready for the start of the 2019 season.
Dr. Anthony Romeo will handle the procedure, which was recommended after Bleier underwent an MRI on Thursday morning and received a second opinion.
Bleier said the pain was so severe after he threw a pitch Wednesday that it felt like he had been shot in the back. He didn't know that he retired the Red Sox's Eduardo Núñez on a ground ball until he made it to the trainers' room.
After returning home following the surgery, Bleier will begin rehabbing in Sarasota instead of staying with the Orioles.
Andrew Cashner will throw a bullpen session on Sunday and come off the disabled list to start Wednesday or Thursday against the Nationals in D.C., as long as he doesn't experience any setbacks.
Tim Beckham will serve as the designated hitter tonight at Double-A Bowie and play third base again on Sunday. He's still expected to come off the disabled list on June 23.
Outfielder Colby Rasmus had a double and home run last night in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Single-A Frederick. He's expected to be activated from the disabled list on Thursday after his rehab assignment concludes.
David Hess is available in the bullpen tonight.
Manager Buck Showalter said closer Zach Britton is available again after retiring the side in order last night with two strikeouts. It's a good sign that Showalter is comfortable using Britton on back-to-back nights.
Left-hander D.J. Snelten cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles designated him for assignment this week to make room for infielder Corban Joseph on the 40-man roster.
