Bradish leaves game after 74 pitches, Orioles lose 5-3 in 11 innings

Kyle Bradish jogged out of the dugout, twisted his body sideways while leaping over the first base line and pounded his fist into his glove. The same routine. Like it was any other night.

It wasn’t.

Bradish hadn’t surrendered a home run in his last 10 starts dating back to the 2023 season, but Phillies leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber sent a 2-1 curveball into the right-center field seats – a 406-foot shot that made the red-clad sections of Camden Yards explode. The decibel level jumped in the same way that the ball left Schwarber’s bat.

Manager Brandon Hyde removed Bradish after only 74 pitches through five innings and the Orioles behind 2-1. Not at all like any other night.

Anthony Santander hit a two-out, game-tying home run off Matt Strahm in the eighth in front of an announced sellout crowd of 43,987 at Camden Yards before rain interrupted play in the top of the 11th. Alec Bohm delivered a two-run double off Jacob Webb in the Phillies' 5-3 victory, but talk of measuring sticks and a possible World Series preview were shoved aside amid concerns over Bradish.

Bryce Harper was given an intentional walk before Bohm's 105.6 mph liner into deep left-center field following a delay of one hour and 11 minutes. Seranthony Dominguez stranded Santander at third base by striking out pinch-hitters Colton Cowser and Kyle Stowers.

The Orioles are 45-24 and have lost back-to- back home games for only the second time this season. Their record is 16-7 in games after a loss. And they trail the first-place Yankees by 3 1/2.

Cionel Pérez replaced Yennier Cano in the top of the 10th with the bases loaded and two outs, and Schwarber singled to right field for a 3-2 lead. Santander threw out pinch-runner Johan Rojas at the plate.

Orion Kerkering hit Jordan Westburg leading off the bottom of the 10th. Adley Rutschman and pinch-hitter Ryan O'Hearn struck out, Gunnar Henderson walked and Cedric Mullins dived across the plate on a wild pitch, with an out call reversed. Santander flied out, it began to pour and the tarp was unrolled.

Bradish retired 11 in a row after facing Schwarber, and the Orioles tied the game against Ranger Suárez in the third on doubles by Mullins – a left-on-left matchup resulting in their first hit – and Rutschman. Suárez struck out the next two batters, and the Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on catcher Rafael Marchán’s two-out homer, his first hit in the majors since 2021.

Marchán didn’t play for the Phillies in 2022 or 2023. They brought him back Wednesday and he was 0-for-5 until the home run.

Schwarber has hit seven leadoff home runs this season, 38 in his career and 25 with the Phillies. He’s an ambusher. Meanwhile, Bradish entered tonight with no home runs allowed or any losses in 10 consecutive starts, making him the first Orioles pitcher to build that streak since Hoyt Wilhelm with 12 in a row spanning the 1958 and 1959 seasons, per STATS.

The Phillies couldn’t get another baserunner against Bradish until Bohm reached on an infield single with two outs in the fourth and Bryson Stott walked. The right-hander brought his best heat, striking out Bryce Harper in the first on five pitches clocked at 98 mph, 98.1, 97.9, 98.4 and 98.6, the last the hardest of his career.

Keegan Akin suddenly began to warm in the fifth and Bradish was done after allowing two runs and three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Forty-three of his 74 pitches were strikes.

In his previous start, Bradish allowed a leadoff hit and retired the next 18. He threw 88 pitches.

Akin retired all nine batters he faced, striking out four, in his longest outing since Sept. 28, 2022 in Boston. Twenty-one of 30 pitches were strikes. He kept the Orioles close and saved the bullpen, and Santander belted his 15th homer with the count 1-2.

Craig Kimbrel stranded a runner in the ninth, getting a generous called third strike on Stott, who slammed his bat and helmet to the ground.

Any deficit against Suárez was troublesome. He brought a 1.81 ERA and 0.854 WHIP into the game, and 10 wins in 11 decisions.

Suárez went 6 2/3 innings and allowed one run and six hits with two walks and six strikeouts. He threw 88 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.77.

Santander and Austin Hays singled with no outs in the fourth, but Jorge Mateo bunted into a force and James McCann grounded into a double play. McCann singled off Suárez with one out in the seventh, Westburg doubled off Jeff Hoffman with two outs, and Rutschman took a called third strike on the eight pitch of the at-bat, which appeared to miss outside.

* Rutschman is the first catcher with 50 or more RBIs in his team’s first 70 games of a season since Oakland’s Stephen Vogt in 2015, per STATS.

* Infielder Anthony Servideo moved up from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk today. He replaces Jackson Holliday, who’s on the seven-day injured list with right elbow inflammation.

Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias said on the MASN broadcast that Holliday’s elbow is basically “barking,” he underwent some tests and there are no other plans beyond rest.

“Hopefully it’s more of a week or two or three kind of thing,” Elias said, “but I don’t want to put anything on it right now, timeline-wise.”

Servideo had an RBI single in the fourth inning, which also included back-to-back home runs from Billy Cook and Daniel Johnson, a two-run double from Heston Kjerstad and Cook’s RBI single. Johnson had a run-scoring double in the seventh.

Brandon Young tossed five scoreless innings with only one hit, no walks and four strikeouts. Trey McGough followed with three scoreless innings.

Collin Burns hit his fourth home run for Bowie. Kyle Brnovich allowed one run in four innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

Enrique Bradfield Jr. and Coby Mayo hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning at High-A Aberdeen. Mayo doubled in his next at-bat.

Mayo doubled and walked last night in his first injury rehab game.

Catcher Adam Retzbach hit his second home run tonight. Reliever Zach Fruit allowed one hit and struck out six batters in 4 1/3 innings.

Single-A Delmarva was no-hit for eight innings before Angel Tejada singled and scored in the ninth.
