Braves claim Chaz Roe off waivers from Orioles

The Orioles won't be able to keep reliever Chaz Roe in the organization.

The Braves have claimed Roe off waivers, another curious move by a team that's rebuilding. But if outfielder Matt Kemp makes sense for them, why not Roe?

The Orioles designated Roe for assignment on July 29 after they signed reliever Logan Ondrusek. Roe is out of minor league options and the Orioles tried to pass him through waivers.

Roe, 29, could have declined an outright assignment and elected free agency. However, the Braves made the point moot by claiming him.

Roe was 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA in nine appearances after the Orioles selected his contract from Triple-A Norfolk on June 30 as part of a flurry of roster moves that also included pitcher Vance Worley and catcher Caleb Joseph coming off the disabled list. He allowed four runs and eight hits in 9 2/3 innings, with seven walks and 11 strikeouts.

In his last appearance on July 28 in Minnesota, Roe allowed one run and two hits in 1 2/3 innings. He also walked one batter and struck out two.

In case you missed it, the Athletics placed Sonny Gray on the disabled list with right forearm soreness, removing him as Thursday afternoon's starter against the Orioles in Oakland. The spot is listed as TBD.

I'll be joining the team in Oakland. Meanwhile, the Orioles lead the White Sox 2-0 in the first inning today on Manny Machado's two-run homer off James Shields.
