Brian Roberts talks about the new infield

It doesn't sound like the Orioles have a lot of interest in pitcher Joe Blanton, who's reportedly available after the Phillies signed left-hander Cliff Lee. The reviews seemed to be mixed in the organization and I'd be surprised if the club made a run at him. The Orioles still want to add a veteran starter to provide more competition in spring training. Right now. you're looking at Jeremy Guthrie, Brian Matusz, Jake Arrieta, Brad Bergesen, Chris Tillman, Zach Britton and Rick VandenHurk. And one Orioles official mentioned six candidates for five spots, so someone is being left out in the early projections. Interest remains in free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche. Still no idea when the Orioles will finalize a deal to fill that spot, but LaRoche is very much in the discussion. Throw some serious money at him and let's move onto the next position. The Orioles are still looking to add a few more relievers, and don't be surprised if another utility player is acquired. Cesar Izturis has a spot waiting for him, but there are no guarantees that Brendan Harris or Robert Andino will occupy a seat on the bench. The club has some concerns about the potential lack of offense in the late innings. Second baseman Brian Roberts is looking forward to having Mark Reynolds and J.J. Hardy added to the infield, along with the next first baseman. Roberts joked about it being "old hat" before saying, "It's great. I've been through quite a few infields and each one brings something new and exciting. And I think this is no different. As I told many people, it kind of brings two young guys in with a lot of experience but also still a lot of upside. I think that's a great thing for us." Asked about his health, Roberts replied: "I'm doing great. It's been an interesting winter, but it's now finally back to 100 percent and getting ready to go. I'm doing good now." Roberts said he's training just as hard as ever, though not at API. He'd be full-go if spring training started tomorrow.
