Bundy update and other notes

HOUSTON - Dylan Bundy threw three innings today at extended spring training. He will throw a bullpen session on Saturday and graduate to four innings next week. Bundy didn't allow a hit in his start against the Twins in Fort Myers. He walked three batters and struck out four. "I wasn't getting ahead in the count," he said. "I walked the first guy in each inning. That's not good at all. I've got to get my command and go after hitters. Get ahead in the count and get better results. "Other than that, I'm happy. My arm feels great. No problems, which is always a plus." Bundy's fastball sat at 91 mph and topped out at 92. "The main thing is arm feels strong," he said. "I wish my velocity was higher, but it will come back. It just takes time. "Basically, I've got to get my command back and everything else will take care of itself." The Orioles lead the all-time season series against the Astros 12-6, going 10-2 at home and 2-4 in Houston. The Orioles have won each of their last five series-opening games on the road - in Minnesota, St. Petersburg, Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee - and are 6-3 in nine road series openers this season. In the month of May, the Orioles rank second in the majors in home runs (36) and home runs per game (1.33), and fourth in slugging percentage (.426). They've homered in 22 of 27 May games, including 11 with at least two. Nelson Cruz leads the majors with 19 home runs and has set a club record with 12 in May, passing Jim Gentile (1962) and Eddie Murray (1987), who each hit 11. Cruz has 48 RBIs, the second-most for an Oriole before the end of May in club history, according to STATs. He trails Chris Davis' 50 in 2013. Cruz passed Eddie Murray (47 in 1984) last night. Since opening day 2013, Davis (11.92) and Cruz (13.17) rank first and second in the majors, respectively, in at-bats per home run. Davis leads the majors in that time with 60 home runs in 197 games played, and Cruz is tied for fourth with 46 despite playing in just 159 games. The Orioles lead the majors with a .988 fielding percentage and are tied with the Reds for fewest errors committed this season (23). Opponents have batted .175/.252/.227 against him this season, collecting just three extra-base hits in 109 plate appearances. Left-hander Brian Matusz allowed both inherited runners to score last night in Milwaukee after stranding 16 of 17 over his first 23 appearances. Since moving to the bullpen in 2012, Matusz ranks third in the majors, stranding 62 of 70 inherited runners (88.6 percent). The Orioles lead majors with a .283 average with runners in scoring position, going 112-for-396 for a slash line of .283/.346/.399. Double-A Bowie pitcher Zach Davies has been activated from the disabled list and he will start tonight against Akron.
