Burnes goes on paternity list and Krook recalled for tonight's game

The Orioles placed Corbin Burnes on the paternity list today and recalled left-hander Matt Krook from Triple-A Norfolk. The bullpen has an extra reliever tonight.

Burnes can be away from the team for three days. Reliever Jacob Webb went on the paternity list on Opening Day.

The news comes after Burnes registered his 13th quality start last night by allowing one run over seven innings in an 11-2 win over the Rangers.

Krook was acquired in spring training from the Yankees for cash considerations. He debuted last summer and made four appearances, allowing 11 runs in four innings.

He’s appeared in 26 games with Norfolk and posted a 3.71 ERA and 1.350 WHIP in 26 2/3 innings, walking 17 batters and striking out 31. He’s surrendered only two home runs.

The month of May was Krook at his best, with one run and three hits in 10 innings. He’s allowed eight runs and walked seven batters this month in 7 2/3 innings.

Krook is wearing No. 66. He gives the 'pen a fourth left-hander with Danny Coulombe recovering from surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow.

The pitching staff will undergo more changes with Burnes' eventual return and Dean Kremer reentering the rotation. Kremer threw 75 pitches yesterday in his third rehab start with Norfolk.

The Orioles also announced that infielder Nick Maton cleared outright waivers and accepted an assignment to Norfolk following last night’s game. He was designated for assignment four days ago to make room for outfielder Heston Kjerstad.

Albert Suárez starts tonight and he’s lost some momentum, allowing eight runs and 16 hits in his last two outings over 8 2/3 innings. He’s walked eight batters and struck out six. His ERA has risen from 1.61 to 2.70.

The Oriole are 14-6 against the Rangers since 2021.

Gunnar Henderson’s on-base streak has reached 34 games, the longest by an Orioles batter since Nick Markakis’ 38-game stretch in 2009.

From STATS: Henderson hit .154 and slugged .462 against inside pitches in May but is batting .483 and slugging .966 against them this month.

The Orioles have hit 57 home runs this month, the most in club history in June. The total is third in major league history behind the 2023 Braves’ 61 and the 2022 Yankees’ 58. The most home runs hit by the Orioles in any month is 58 in May 1987.

Max Scherzer is making his second start after his reinstatement from the 60-day injured list. He shut out the Royals on one hit in five innings.

Scherzer is 7-2 with a 3.17 ERA and 1.024 WHIP in 14 career starts against the Orioles. He’s 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA and 0.871 WHIP in seven starts at Camden Yards.

Anthony Santander is 4-for-7 with a double and two home runs. James McCann is 0-for-7 with three strikeouts.

Texas had the highest batting average in the majors against off-speed pitches last season at .282 and the Orioles ranked 20th at .238. This season, the Orioles are first at .265 and the Rangers are 19th at .232.

I'll add the lineup when it's posted.
