Cody Carroll talks about his major league debut at Yankee Stadium

ARLINGTON, Texas - It's been a whirlwind few days for Orioles bullpen right-hander Cody Carroll. On July 24, he was traded by the New York Yankees with two other pitchers for Zach Britton. Then he reported to Triple-A Norfolk and pitched twice for the Tides. On Tuesday, he got his first call to the majors. Yesterday, he made his major league debut.

And for the 25-year-old Carroll, it went well. He faced his former organization in the last of the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning on 21 pitches with a fastball that averaged 96.8 mph.

It was pretty special, just like he figured it would be.

"It was everything you can ever dream of as a little kid. Especially pitching there at Yankee Stadium. It could not have been more perfect," he said.

Carroll said he actually took some time to soak in the moment and all it meant to him.

"When I was running out to the mound, I kind of had to glance around a little and take it all in," said Carroll. "Then once I got out there, just lock it in and we've got a job to do. But it meant I finally made it, really. A life-long dream. Just being out there and seeing Yankee Stadium was an incredible experience."

He got Shane Robinson to ground out and Brett Gardner flied out on a 3-1 pitch. Then Giancarlo Stanton doubled to left on a slider, but Carroll got Didi Gregorius to fly to center and the inning was over with a zero.

He looked relaxed, but said some butterflies where there.

"I may have looked relaxed. I think I was a little more nervous warming up in the 'pen," he said. "Then they played 'God Bless America' before I came out and I had a little more time to soak it in. As soon as got through my warm-up pitches, it felt like just another game once a hitter stood in."

In 34 Triple-A games this year between the Orioles and Yankees, Carroll is 4-0 with a 2.47 ERA and 57 strikeouts with 18 walks over 43 2/3 innings.

In nine days, he's been with three teams, counting Triple-A Scranton at the time of the trade. Now on a rebuilding Oriole team, he sees a big opportunity.

"Been all over the world here the past week," he said. "But it's been fun. Got to meet a bunch of new guys down in Norfolk and then came here and met everybody. A great experience. One of the things they told us after the trades: We'll have a lot of opportunities to show what we can do and hopefully (I can) stick here."
