Conner Greene joins Orioles (plus other notes)

The Orioles replaced injured reliever Tyler Wells today with reliever Conner Greene, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk.

Greene, wearing No. 71, is waiting to become the 12th Orioles player to make his major league debut this season. He's been on a few taxi squads.

Wells went on the 10-day injured list yesterday with tendinitis in his right wrist.

Greene, 26, is a former seventh-round draft pick of the Blue Jays in 2013. The Orioles signed him to a minor league deal in December.

Used in nine games by Norfolk, Greene posted a 7.39 ERA and 1.964 WHIP in 28 innings and averaged 12.2 hits per nine innings. He walked 17 batters and struck out 28.

Greene has made three starts and should be stretched out to provide innings, though he hasn't pitched since July 10. He allowed one run in seven innings on May 21 and tossed five scoreless on June 11.

Eight minor league seasons for Greene have produced a 4.34 ERA and 1.487 WHIP in 181 games. He's allowed only 50 home runs in 729 2/3 innings.

The Orioles had room on their 40-man roster with pitcher Keegan Akin and outfielder Anthony Santander on the COVID-19 injured list.

Meanwhile, the Orioles and Nationals haven't revealed their lineups for tonight's game. The Orioles are doing fielding drills before batting practice.

Pat Valaika has three home runs in his last two starts.

Ramón Urías is batting .355/.444/.419 with runners in scoring position.

Matt Harvey is coming off his best start as an Oriole with six scoreless innings and only three hits allowed Sunday in Kansas City. His ERA dropped from 7.70 to 7.13.

Harvey faced the Nationals on May 23 in D.C. and allowed five earned runs (six total) and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six batters. Kyle Schwarber homered.

Tonight marks Harvey's 19th career appearance and 18th start against the Nationals. He's 3-8 with a 3.97 ERA and 1.294 WHIP in 102 innings. Ryan Zimmermann is 6-for-23 with a double and two home runs. Josh Bell is 6-for-18 with a home run. Josh Harrison is 8-for-17 with two doubles.

Max Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young Award winner, is 7-4 with a 2.83 ERA and 0.886 WHIP in 18 starts and is averaging 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings. He's allowed 11 runs in his last two starts over 10 2/3 innings but hasn't lost since May 30.

Scherzer is 7-2 with a 3.17 ERA and 1.024 WHIP in 14 career starts against the Orioles. He's 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA and 0.871 WHIP in seven starts at Camden Yards.

The Orioles are 19-13 when hitting multiple home runs.

The Orioles announced last night that they signed outfielder John Rhodes, a third-rounder from the University of Kentucky. They went overslot with a $1.375 million bonus, per an industry source. The value of the 76th overall pick was $818,200.
