Coulombe reinstated from injured list, Smith goes on IL

Orioles left-hander Danny Coulombe is reinstated from the injured list and available to pitch tonight. Burch Smith goes on the IL with a right adductor/groin strain.

Coulombe is returning from June surgery to remove bone chips in his left elbow.

Smith threw in the bullpen earlier today with head athletic trainer Brian Ebel watching him.

The Orioles lost two of three games to the Tigers last weekend at Comerica Park. They meet again beginning tonight at Camden Yards, but there’s more at stake than revenge.

Yesterday’s 5-3 win over the Giants brought the Orioles within four games of the first-place Yankees with nine more to play. They lead the Royals by three for the home wild card.

The Tigers have won four in a row, including a sweep of the Royals, nine of 11 and 25 of 35 to join the race.

Corbin Burnes will try to slow them down. He’s 14-8 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.119 WHIP in 30 games and has followed a rough August by allowing only three earned runs this month in 18 innings. He tossed seven scoreless in Detroit with only two hits allowed.

Burnes has registered 21 quality starts. He’s made four career appearances against the Tigers and allowed only two runs in 22 innings.

Opponents have posted a .278 on-base percentage against Burnes. The last Orioles pitcher with a lower opponent OBP in his first season in a minimum 100 innings was Doyle Alexander (.261) in 1972, per STATS.

The Orioles still haven’t posted their lineup.

Colton Cowser has joined Gunnar Henderson (2023), Curt Blefary (1965) and Ron Hansen (1960) as the only Orioles rookies with at least 20 doubles, 20 home runs and 50 walks in a season.

Grayson Rodriguez is throwing another bullpen session today but still hasn't faced hitters.

First baseman Ryan Mountcastle begins his rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Norfolk.

The Orioles can’t clinch a playoff berth before Sunday.

The Tigers love hiding the identity of their starters until the day of the game, and not early morning. We finally learned that they’re giving the ball to left-hander Tyler Holton, an opener who recorded a save and a hold against the Orioles in Detroit.

Detroit’s four wins in a row while striking out more than 10 times in each game is the longest streak in team history, per STATS.

Tonight’s game airs exclusively on Apple TV+.
