Davis scratched from lineup (plus other notes)

NEW YORK - First baseman Chris Davis has been scratched from the Orioles lineup due to a sore right elbow after being hit by a pitch in the fourth inning on Friday. He was in manager Buck Showalter's office earlier this morning.

Chris-Davis-homer-Fenway.pngDavis wanted to play, but Showalter made the decision to sit him.

Here's the new lineup:

Joey Rickard LF
Adam Jones CF
Manny Machado 3B
Mark Trumbo DH
Welington Castillo C
Trey Mancini 1B
Jonathan Schoop 2B
Craig Gentry RF
J.J. Hardy SS

Wade Miley LHP

Chris Tillman is flying to Charlotte tonight to stay ahead of the weather, with rain in the forecast, and will work out there before Tuesday night's injury rehab start.

Showalter still needs a starter for Tuesday in Boston, and he eliminated new bullpen additions Logan Verrett and Richard Bleier as candidates. Alec Asher remains the likely choice as long as he isn't needed today in relief.

Verrett hasn't pitched in a major league game since Sept. 23, 2016 with the Mets. The clubhouse atmosphere today suited him.

"It's real nice," he said. "Missed it. Missed all the guys up here, mainly. It's a good group of guys and it's fun to be back with them."

Verrett finally has joined the Orioles after being one of their Rule 5 picks in December 2014 and being part of the spring training camp this year after they traded for him.

"It kind of seemed like a long time coming since 2015, but it's nice to be here," he said. "It's somewhat ironic, I guess, that it's New York, a familiar city. But nonetheless, I'm glad to be here."

The Orioles are getting a pitcher who's been on a roll. Verrett allowed only one run in his last 6 2/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk.

"I just caught a few breaks here and there," he said. "It's always a grind, but early on it just seemed like there wasn't anything going our way as a team down there in Norfolk. The whole team's really turned it around and started to get that ball rolling in the right direction."

Shameless plug alert: I'm appearing on "O's Xtra" at 12:30 p.m. on MASN.
