Davis talks about Orioles players and All-Star voting (Machado note)

The most players the Orioles have ever had voted to start the All-Star Game is three and that has happened twice. Right now, four O's are leading at their positions to start the game July 16 at New York's Citi Field. Adam Jones is first and Nick Markakis third among outfielders, while Chris Davis leads all vote getters at first base and J.J. Hardy leads among shortstops. In 1971, the Orioles saw Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson voted in. In 1997, they had Roberto Alomar, Cal Ripken Jr. and Brady Anderson voted to start for the American League. Davis is impressed at how well the O's have done in the voting with the latest figures released last night. "I think it's a sign of us doing the right things," Davis said. "Not only individually, but as a team and it's a reward for all the hard work. It's a great message that the fans are communicating to us that they are watching, paying attention and they are behind us." Davis leads Prince Fielder for first base by more than a million votes. Davis has the second-most votes of any AL player behind Detroit's Miguel Cabrera with 2,999,094 votes to 1,980,129 for Fielder. Is Davis a little surprised that so many fans have voted for him? "A little bit," he said. "There are obviously some great first baseman in this league and a lot of good competition. But after the start I had there is a part of me that expects to at least be in the conversation. With a fan base like ours, if you play the game the right way and are successful and put yourself in a position to be rewarded, I think they'll reward you." The Orioles had three All-Stars last year with Jones, Matt Wieters and Jim Johnson making the team. It was their most in the game since four O's made it in 2005. That was the last year that a player from the Orioles was voted to start and both Brian Roberts and Miguel Tejada started for the AL that year. Manny note: Manny Machado now has four straight multi-hit games, a career best for him. He is 9-for-20 during that stretch with four doubles. Machado leads the major leagues with 97 hits and 31 doubles. He is on a pace to produce 228 hits this year and 73 doubles, which would set a major league record. The Orioles' single-season hits mark is 214 by Tejada in 2006 and the doubles mark is 56 by Roberts in 2009.
