De Aza walk-off single in bottom of ninth (Nats win 5-4)

The Nationals jumped out in the first thanks to a leadoff double by Wilmer Difo. Victor Robles sacrificed to the pitcher to get Difo to third. After Anthony Rendon walked, Daniel Murphy's single scored Difo.

After two innings, the Nats led 1-0.

But the Pirates rallied in the third against Nats starter Edwin Jackson. With one out, Max Moroff walked. Moroff reached second after a groundout to first by pinch-hitter Steven Brault.

Brault had arrived because starting pitcher Ivan Nova got hit by a foul tip on the hand and had to leave the game.

Chris Bostick doubled to score Moroff. Starling Marte singled to score Bostick.

Mid-third, the Pirates led the Nats 2-1.

Tyler Glasnow came in to pitch for the Pirates in the bottom of third. Nova finished two innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 34 pitches, 23 for strikes.

Update: In the third, facing Glasnow, Rendon and Murphy were walked. Alejandro De Aza, pinch-hitting for Howie Kendrick, sacrificed to third base to get men to second and third. Adam Lind's groundout to second scored Rendon.

Mid-fourth, the Nats and the Pirates are tied at 2-2.

Update II: In the bottom of the sixth, the Nats loaded the bases with two outs on three walks by Pirate relief pitching. But Robles struck out swinging versus Edgar Santana to end the opportunity to go ahead.

After six innings, the game is tied 2-2.

Update III: In the seventh, De Aza smacked a run-scoring triple and Adam Lind followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Nats back in the lead 4-2.

Jackson finished six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, 57 for strikes.

After seven innings, the Nats lead the Pirates 4-2.

Update IV: Sean Doolittle came on in the ninth and allowed a single by Andrew McCutchen. On the next pitch, Josh Bell hit a two-run shot over the left-center field wall to tie the game. It was the first time in 22 games with the Nats that Doolittle had blown a save. For Bell, it was home run No. 26.

In the bottom of the ninth against Pirates reliever Daniel Hudson, Rendon singled to center field. Murphy singled to right field. Rendon went to third. With the infield in, De Aza singled down right field line to score Rendon and win the game in walk-off fashion.

Final score: the Nats 5, the Pirates 4.
