One of the many bright spots among the Nationals' September callups has been the play of right fielder Brian Goodwin. Coming into this week, Goodwin is batting .313 with three RBIs.
Manager Dusty Baker said early last week how impressed he has been with Goodwin, and the former North Carolina Tar Heel has delivered at the plate and in the field in Monday's opener against the Diamondbacks.
Facing right-hander Tanner Roark to lead off the game, Arizona's Jean Segura lined the first offering deep to right-center field. Showing his speed, Goodwin caught the ball up against the wall. The catch prevented extra bases for Segura and Roark subsequently finished the inning up 1-2-3.
Then, in the bottom of the second inning with one out, Stephen Drew smacked a double down the right field line. One batter later, Goodwin raked his first major league triple, an RBI hit that scored Drew for a 1-0 Nationals lead.
Meanwhile, Roark has struck out four batters in a row at one point, including all three hitters he faced in the second.
After three innings, the Nationals lead the Diamondbacks 1-0.
Update: The Diamondbacks used a five-run fourth to take the lead. Segura again got a hold of a Roark pitch, but this time he got all of it. Segura crushed a 3-2 pitch over the right-center field wall, tying the game at 1-1.
After a walk and an out, Welington Castillo and Brandon Drury singled. Jake Lamb scored on the Drury base hit to left field, and the Diamondbacks led 2-1. With two men on, Yasmany Tomas drilled a 1-1 pitch over the left-center field wall for a 5-1 lead.
Update II: The Nationals fought back with three runs in the fourth. Trea Turner drilled a two-run double and Goodwin walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run. With the bases loaded again and two outs, Anthony Rendon struck out.
Roark lasted four innings, giving up five runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts. It was the first time since Aug. 19 Roark had allowed two homers, and only the fourth time all season. He threw only 70 pitches, 45 for strikes.
After four innings, the D-backs lead the Nationals 5-4.
Update III: The game was delayed by rain for 20 minutes in the top of the sixth.
Update IV: Wilson Ramos was injured on a relay throw from first baseman Ryan Zimmerman during the top of the sixth. With two men on, Tomas doubled to score two runs. The second run scored on the high throw, Zimmerman's relay of a peg from Brian Goodwin in right field. Ramos leaped to catch the throw, then came down on his right leg and crumpled to the ground with the ball rolling away. Ramos stayed down on the ground and was assisted by head athletic trainer Paul Lessard. He then was helped off the field by Lessard and replaced by Pedro Severino.
The D-backs scored five runs in the inning and lead 10-4, but the biggest concern is the status of Ramos. We will update with further details after the game.
Update V: The D-backs scored three more runs in the eighth. Lucas Giolito gave up a two-run shot to Segura and a solo homer to Lamb. The D-backs lead 13-4 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Update VI: Arizona drops the Nationals 14-4. But the biggest news of the game is the apparent injury suffered by Ramos. The Nats' lead over the Dodgers for home field advantage in the National League Division Series is now just one game.
