Dylan Bundy and three relievers blank Red Sox 2-0

The Orioles went from road to home, from playing a National League team to taking on an American League East rival. But their recent run of outstanding pitching followed the club to Camden Yards tonight.

And Dylan Bundy's very impressive season continued, as he faced the defending division champion Boston Red Sox.

Bundy pitched seven-plus scoreless tonight as the Orioles blanked Boston 2-0 in front of 34,442 at Camden Yards. The Orioles are 11-4 and end a six-game home losing streak versus Boston.

Orioles pitching has allowed just one run over the last 33 innings. Tonight, four Orioles pitchers combined on a six-hitter and it was the club's second shutout in three games. They've allowed one run the past three games.

Bundy's scoreless start - his second in a row - was made possible with some huge help from his bullpen. After Bundy allowed a leadoff single in the eighth to catcher Christian Vázquez, he exited to a standing ovation. Lefty Donnie Hart came on and walked pinch-hitter Chris Young. But then Hart got Dustin Pedroia on a deep flyout to left with a runner advancing to third. With men on the corners and one down, Hart struck out Andrew Benintendi and Mychal Givens came on for Mookie Betts. Givens got Bettts to pop out on a 1-1 pitch and the Orioles escaped the huge jam with the shutout and lead intact.

Brad Brach pitched the ninth for his third save in three games, getting a 1-2-3 inning on 14 pitches. He has needed just 33 pitches to get three saves since Wednesday.

Bundy allowed six hits with one walk and three strikeouts. He threw a career-high 108 pitches and improved to 3-1 with an ERA of 1.37 over his four starts. He has thrown 13 scoreless innings his last two games.

Going back to Wednesday night at Cincinnati, Ubaldo Jiménez, Wade Miley and Bundy have put up this combined line the past three games: 22 2/3 innings, 10 hits and one run allowed.

Bundy pitched out of a couple of big jams earlier. With runners on first and third and no outs in the second, he struck out Pablo Sandoval with a 94 mph fastball and got Vázquez to bounce into a double play.

In the sixth, Bundy faced a first and second jam with no outs and seeing a dangerous part of the Red Sox order for the third time. But he got Benintendi to line out and induced popouts from both Betts and Mitch Moreland, Boston's No. 3 and 4 hitters.

The top three hitters tonight in the Boston order - Pedroia, Benintendi and Betts - went a combined 1-for-11. As a team, the Red Sox went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Pedroia left the game in the last of the eighth when he appeared to get spiked by Manny Machado on a hard slide into second base. He was replaced by Steve Selsky.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the last of the third. Craig Gentry lined a one-out double into the left field corner and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored on Adam Jones' single for the lead and Jones' seventh RBI. Jones fell behind 0-2 to Drew Pomeranz, fouled off three pitches, got even at 2-2 and lined a single to center.

Machado's third homer made it a 2-0 lead in the fifth. He hit a liner to left-center that quickly exited Camden Yards. It was No. 3 and came on a 2-1 cutter. Machado's blast left his bat at 109 mph and traveled 421 feet. He began tonight with just five hits in 37 at-bats over his previous 10 games and hitting .176 for the season.

In the second game of this series on Saturday night, Jayson Aquino will make his season debut and first major league start. Right-handed knuckleballer Steven Wright (1-1, 8.36 ERA) starts for Boston.
