Feldman superb but not supported (O's lose 2-0)

NEW YORK - Scott Feldman won't get the win today. And the Orioles won't stay in third place unless they score in the ninth inning. Feldman has been removed after 111 pitches over seven innings, his highest total in 10 starts with the Orioles and his second-highest this season. He threw 114 in a May 1 start for the Cubs. Feldman held the Yankees to one run, with six hits, one walk, five strikeouts and two hit batters. If it's not his best start with the Orioles, it's a close second to his July 22 outing in Kansas City when he allowed two runs in eight innings. Troy Patton replaced Feldman in the eighth with the Yankees still ahead 1-0. Robinson Cano greeted him with a home run to right field - the 25th this season for Cano and the 202nd of his career to tie Bill Dickey for 15th place on the Yankees' all-time list. Kevin Gausman replaced Patton for his first Orioles appearance since July 9. Left-handers were hitting .281 against Patton before today, compared to .257 by right-handers. Cano was 0-for-8 against him lifetime. Feldman's last pitch resulted in the second 4-6-3 double play from Derek Jeter. Now, he'll wait to find out whether he gets his fourth loss with the Orioles or a no-decision. J.J. Hardy led off the top of the eighth with a walk, but Wilson Betemit hit into a 6-4-3 double play, with Jeter making a nice backhanded stop. Betemit is 0-for-8 since coming off the disabled list. Update: Game over. Nate McLouth is stranded after leading off the top of the ninth with an infield hit, and the Orioles lose 2-0 to fall into fourth place. Ivan Nova tossed his second complete game against the Orioles this season, allowing only three hits. Chris Davis flied to the warning track in right field for the second out. Initially, it appeared that he had tied the game. The Orioles (71-63) are only eight games above .500 for the first time since July 10, and 18-20 since the All-Star break. They're now 15-6 in two-run games. Otherwise, all is well.
