The Nationals will not have second baseman Daniel Murphy or first baseman Matt Adams available tonight after trades sent them to the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals, respectively, earlier in the day.
But the Nats (62-63) still have a critical series on the docket which commences tonight against the National League East second-place Philadelphia Phillies (68-56). Despite changes to the 25-man roster, the club still has 37 games remaining on the regular season schedule, and will play the Phillies six times in the next nine days.
Wilmer Difo will start at second base and Ryan Zimmerman will be at first base in game one of the series.
Right-hander Tanner Roark (8-12, 4.13 ERA) has been red hot recently. Going to full confidence in his fastball, the veteran has reeled off a career-high five consecutive wins. Since 2016, Roark has faced the Phillies more times than any other opponent (13), but he is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA against them this season.
He is opposed by Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez (8-9, 4.13 ERA).
