MIAMI - The Nationals have selected the contract of right-hander Justin Miller, who has pitched for the Tigers and the Rockies but hasn't been in the majors since 2016. He takes the roster spot vacated by right-hander Erick Fedde, who was sent back to Triple-A Syracuse following his start Wednesday against the Padres.
Miller, 30, is 6-foot-3, 215 lbs., and his best season was 2015, when he went 3-3 with one save and a 4.05 ERA in 34 games with the Rockies. He struck out 38 in 33 1/3 innings of relief with 11 walks and a .178 BAA.
Miller shone for Syracuse, firing 13 2/3 scoreless innings with 23 strikeouts. He struggled a bit at the major league level in 2016, with a 5.70 ERA and 1-1 record. Miller was a 2008 16th-round selection of the Rangers.
The matchup in the series opener is one of polar opposites record-wise. Right-hander Max Scherzer (7-1, 1.78 ERA) opposes right-hander José Ureña (0-7, 4.55). Yes, it is raining outside, but in a domed stadium, weather isn't an issue.
