Game update and more notes (O's down 2-0)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz tossed two scoreless innings today against the Red Sox, allowing singles to Dustin Pedroia in the first and Xander Bogaerts in the second. Matusz didn't walk or strike out anyone. He threw 35 pitches, 18 for strikes. Former Red Sox farmhand Brock Huntzinger replaced Matusz to start the third inning and retired the side in order on a fly ball, pop up and bouncer to the mound. Other pitchers on the trip include Troy Patton, T.J. McFarland, Fabio Castillo, Mike Wright, Eduardo Rodriguez, Tim Berry, Eddie Gamboa and Oliver Drake. Drake (Navy) was summoned from minor league camp. David Ortiz, 1-for-20 with 12 strikeouts against Matusz in the regular season, flied to the warning track in center field in the first inning. Delmon Young singled with two outs in the first and doubled with one out in the fourth - the only Orioles baserunner today. Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar, another former Red Sox farmhand, grounded out in the third inning. He's starting at third base today and won't move across the diamond this early in the exhibition schedule. "Right now at third," Showalter said. "We're thinking about how you could keep him. We'll run him over there some a little later on. I want to get a feel for him at third base." Patton has made both trips so far, but there are no firm plans to use him. He must serve a 25-game suspension to start the season. "Be kind of a backup," Showalter said. "He got warmed up yesterday. He almost came in that game yesterday. There's no sense of urgency about getting him ready like there has been in the past. Most of that will be done after we leave. "At some point, he goes out on rehab." Update: Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer off Eduardo Rodriguez in the fourth to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Ortiz led off the inning with a walk. Steve Pearce doubled with one out in the top of the fourth, but Young held at third base and the Orioles failed to score.
