Gausman and Tillman taking turns today

Kevin Gausman and Chris Tillman are coming at today's doubleheader from opposite directions.

Gausman hasn't won since Sept. 30, 2015. Tillman hasn't lost since April 14.

It's not entirely Gausman's fault, of course, but he's 0-5 with a 4.37 ERA and 1.353 WHIP in 12 starts over 68 innings. In his last two starts, he's allowed 10 runs and 16 hits in eight innings.

The Orioles predicted over the winter that Gausman would take the next big step in his career, that he would establish himself in a major league rotation. They need it to happen while scouring the market for another starter.

Gausman is 10-22 with a 4.29 ERA in 54 career starts since the Orioles made him the fourth-overall pick in the 2012 draft out of LSU.

Right-handers are hitting .302 against Gausman this season and left-handers are batting .234.

Gausman faced the Rays on April 25 at Tropicana Field and allowed one run over five innings, with seven strikeouts, in a 2-0 loss. He's 2-4 with a 5.65 ERA in 10 career games (eight starts) versus the Rays.

Logan Forsythe is 4-for-7 with two doubles and a home run against Gausman. Evan Longoria is 6-for-21 with a double and home run, and Desmond Jennings is 1-for-10.

Tillman-Throws-Orange-Sidebar.jpgTillman is 10-1 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.149 WHIP in 15 starts this season covering 89 2/3 innings. He's faced the Rays twice this season and allowed one run and six hits over 11 2/3 innings.

In his career, Tillman is 7-9 with a 3.98 ERA in 22 starts against the Rays. Longoria is 17-for-54 with four doubles, seven home runs and 10 RBIs, Forsythe is 8-for-25 with two doubles, Jennings is 2-for-25 and Brad Miller is 1-for-12.

Does another win and a lowered ERA seal Tillman's inclusion in the All-Star Game?

T.J. McFarland will be recalled for the doubleheader. He's 1-2 with a 5.14 ERA in 13 appearances with the Orioles and most recently worked five innings Monday night with Triple-A Norfolk. He's rested and ready.

The Rays are starting right-hander Matt Andriese in Game 1. He's 6-0 with a 2.88 ERA in 10 games (seven starts) this season and has surrendered only two home runs in 50 innings.

Andriese's last three appearances have come out of the bullpen, his most recent start on June 10. He's worked three innings in three career appearances against the Orioles, allowing four runs and five hits.

Four Orioles have combined for seven at-bats against Andriese. Chris Davis is 1-for-2 with a home run.

Game 2 starter Jake Odorizzi is 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 15 starts. He made two starts against the Orioles in April and allowed five runs and 16 hits in 11 innings, while going 0-1 with a no-decision.

Odorizzi has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 15 starts. Left-handers are batting .192 against him and right-handers are batting .265.

Odorizzi is 2-3 with a 4.64 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) versus the Orioles and 1-3 with a 6.92 ERA in five starts at Camden Yards. Adam Jones is 9-for-23 with a double and home run, J.J. Hardy is 5-for-18 with a double and home run, Mark Trumbo is 4-for-7, Davis is 4-for-18 with two doubles, a home run and eight strikeouts, and Ryan Flaherty is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts.
