GoFundMe page started to help Nats assistant GM Doug Harris with medical costs

Nationals assistant general manager and vice president Doug Harris has been battling leukemia since 2015. In May of 2017, it appeared he had defeated the cancer, with the bone marrow transplant appearing to take full effect.

But the cancer was not completely eliminated. The next step for Harris is a doctor-recommended CAR-T cell therapy, which is still in trial research. The therapy is extremely expensive. His wife, Lisa, has set up a GoFundMe page to try to offset the cost.

The Harrises are looking to raise $400,000 for the treatment, which is not covered by medical insurance.

Nationals director of player development Mark Scialabba has worked with Harris for many years and is one of the best voices to talk about Harris' impact on the Nationals.

"Doug Harris has positively impacted the lives of a countless number of Nationals and baseball prospects over the years through the player development process both on the field and off the field as they grow and progress into young men," Scialabba said. "Doug is a role model as a husband and father, and leader of the Nationals organization for me. He is an extremely valuable member of the front office and the player development staff."

I have covered the Nationals minor league system since 2009 and have called on Harris countless times. He has always been an affable, genuine and honest source of knowledge on the Nationals and their up-and-coming prospects. He has treated me with respect, professionalism and class, and I always look forward to our discussions about the Nats, life and baseball. You always know you are dealing with good people when they ask about you: How is your job? How is your family? Doug is one of those people.

Here are more details from the GoFundMe page from Lisa Harris:

"Thank you for viewing our Site dedicated to helping Doug Harris. Doug is not only my supportive husband but a great father of 3 daughters and has helped so many young athletes obtain their goals in professional baseball. Doug is currently the V.P. and Ass't GM for the Washington Nationals and has been diagnosed with Leukemia. Although previously treated with a Bone Marrow Transplant the disease was not completely eliminated and now Doug has the opportunity to benefit greatly from a new cutting-edge treatment called CAR-T Cell therapy."
