Gonzalez bitten again by home run bug (O's down 3-0)

Before going on the disabled list with an oblique injury, Orioles pitcher Miguel Gonzalez hadn't allowed a home run in his last two starts, and surrendered only two in his last six. He served up two in five innings against the Rays after being activated on June 17, and he's down 1-0 tonight after the White Sox's Gordon Beckham took him deep in the first inning. The Orioles are 12-27 when their opponent scores first. Gonzalez threw 23 pitches in the first. Conor Gillaspie doubled with one out on a ball that turned around Nick Markakis in right field. Not the typical route that we're used to seeing from Markakis. Alexei Ramirez led off the second with a double, the third extra-base hit off Gonzalez in six batters. Steve Pearce grounded out in the bottom of the first against White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana. He's crafted a six-game hitting streak, going 11-for-24 (.458) with four doubles, two home runs, seven RBIs, six walks and six runs scored. His six homers and 41 hits are career-highs. Chris Davis and Nelson Cruz have hit for the home run cycle this season - solo, two-run, three-run and grand slam. Pearce, Adam Jones and Jonathan Schoop are a grand slam away from joining the duo. In 2013, Davis, Nate McLouth and Matt Wieters hit for the home run cycle. Per Elias, 17 major leaguers rode the home run cycle in 2014. Last night's walk-off win was the Orioles' first victory at home when trailing after the seventh (1-14 at Camden Yards and 2-28 overall) and the eighth (1-14 at Camden Yards, 2-29 overall). The Orioles have thrown seven shutouts this season, one more than their 2013 total. They're on pace for 15 shutouts, which would be their most since 1992 (16). The club record is 21 set in 1961. Update: Gonzalez is up to 45 pitches in two innings and he's down 2-0. Ramirez scored with one out on Alejandro De Aza's single. The White Sox did Gonzalez a huge favor with two outs by attempting a delayed double steal with runners on the corners and two outs. De Aza was out at home. Score it 2-4-2. Update II: The White Sox strung together three two-out singles to increase their lead to 3-0 in the fourth. No. 9 hitter Tyler Flowers knocked in Dayan Viciedo. Gonzalez has allowed three runs and seven hits in four innings, with two walks, one strikeout and a home run. He's thrown 70 pitches, 45 for strikes. Pearce extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the third.
