Hagerstown's Goodwin, Skole shine; Perry solid in Double-A; Marrero optioned to Chiefs

The Single-A Hagerstown Suns put on another offensive show Saturday night with a 10-8 victory over the Lakewood Blueclaws. A big part of that power display was from outfielder Brian Goodwin, the 34th overall selection in 2011, who smashed two homers and drove in four runs. Goodwin has four homers in the past five games with nine RBIs. It was his first four-hit game of the season. Hagerstown pitching coach Mark Harris said the 21-year-old has made good progress at the plate since returning from an early quad injury. "He is staying short with his swing," Harris said. "His front side direction is outstanding to the ball, and he is not pulling off anything. He had this approach at the plate before, and now is regaining his stroke." Matt Skole crushed his league-leading 16th homer of the season, a three-run round tripper, for his second homer in the past two games. "Skolie is making progress, but I am more pleased with his defense. He is making great strides," Harris said. Meanwhile, right-hander Ryan Perry had a very impressive professional debut as a starter for Harrisburg. Perry went three innings and had 40 pitches and at least five ground outs. Senators pitching coach Paul Menhart reported Perry's fastball was in the low- to mid-90s. Senators radio play-by-play man Terry Byrom tweeted Perry hit 94 mph. "He commanded the strike zone very well, threw some nice sliders," Menhart said. "I think Ryan was a little antsy because he had never started a game as pro. I think he told me he started five games as a junior at Arizona, so there was some apprehension. But after the first batter, that all went away. He pitched really good. Ryan repeated his delivery, which is what we talked about last week as being a key for a starter. He pounded the zone." Perry will have five days rest on a normal start schedule, go through his sideline sessions, take part in pitcher fielding practice (Menhart reported Perry made a nice play on a swinging bunt to record an out Saturday) and get ready for his next start. If his next start goes well and he has "easy" innings, Menhart said they might let Perry go four innings. "He wanted another inning tonight," Menhart said. "He felt strong. He is a horse, but we are going to be careful with him." Also, the Nationals announced they have recalled from rehab, reinstated and optioned first baseman Chris Marrero to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Marrero has fully recovered from a torn hamstring.
