Hammel and Wada return to clubhouse

SARASOTA, Fla. - The two starting pitchers are done for the day. Jason Hammel and Tsuyoshi Wada each went five innings. Wada stayed on the mound for two extra batters in the fifth after recording the final out, getting a fly ball and giving up a double before manager Buck Showalter halted the inning. Hammel allowed two runs and three hits, with one walk, three strikeouts and a wild pitch. He threw 65 pitches, 43 for strikes. Wada allowed one run and five hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 75 pitches, 50 for strikes. "I got my work in. We'll leave it at that," Hammel said. "I was up in the zone. I was happy with my two-seamer. I wanted to work in it. That was really good. But the other stuff was up in the zone. "I was out there to get my work in and throw strikes. Early, they were really, really aggressive on the first pitch, so I couldn't really work on anything. Got a lot of first balls put in play. They were spitting on a lot of breaking balls. I don't know whether they were automatically taking. But I got my work in." Hammel will start the third game of the season. Is he ready? "Definitely," he said. "That was enough to get me stretched out. I didn't want to gas myself too much. It was warm out there, too. But I got the arm lengthened out and all my pitches pretty close where I wanted them. I'm ready." Kevin Gregg, Luis Ayala and Matt Lindstrom each threw a scoreless inning. Lindstrom got two ground balls and a strikeout.
