Harper gets scoring going again in support of Gio (Nats win 5-2)

NEW YORK - The Nationals tallied a run against Mets starter Zack Wheeler in the third. With one away, Trea Turner singled. It was his second hit of the game, he also doubled in the first inning.

Howie Kendrick singled to put men on the corners.

Bryce Harper drove a line drive to right field for a sacrifice fly RBI. Turner scored from third.

Gio-Gonzalez-throw-white-sidebar.jpgThe Mets attempted to return the favor in the bottom of the third against left-hander Gio Gonzalez. They have scored at least a run immediately after giving up a run 15 out of 31 times this season.

Wheeler singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a one-out walk to Asdrúbal Cabrera.

Facing the dangerous Yoenis Céspedes, who also had singled in the first, Gonzalez induced a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop. Wilmer Flores then grounded out to third to end the threat.

After three innings, Gonzalez has three strikeouts and has allowed two hits, but no runs.

The Nats lead the Mets 1-0 after three innings.

Update: The Nats added on runs in the fourth. Moisés Sierra led off with a single and stole second base. Michael A. Taylor walked. Wilmer Difo singled on a blooper to right field to score Sierra. Pedro Severino's sweet single into left field scored Taylor.

Mid-fourth, the Nats have their biggest lead of the series, 3-0.

Update II: The Mets hit the ball very hard in the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits. Wheeler singled for the second time. Amed Rosario doubled off the center field wall. Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Céspedes grounded out first to score two runs.

After five innings, the Nats lead the Mets 3-2.

Update III: One out singles by Juan Lagares and Tomas Nido got another rally attempt started for the Mets in the sixth. Sammy Solis replaced Gonzalez.Solis struckout pinch-hitter Jose Reyes and got Amed Rosario on a pop up in foul territory.

Gonzalez finished 5 1/3 innings, allowed eight hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts. He threw 97 pitches, 59 for strikes.

After six innings, the Nats lead the Mets 3-2.

Update IV: Turner walked and stole second in the seventh against Robert Gsellman. He came home on a RBI single by Ryan Zimmerman.

Mid-seventh, the Nats lead the Mets 4-2.

Update V: Taylor singled and stole second in the eighth. Difo sacrificed him to third. Taylor scored on a groundout by Severino.

Mid-eighth, the Nats lead the Mets 5-2.

Update VI: Ryan Madson and Brandon Kintzler combined to pitch two scoreless innings, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out four.

Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth. He struck out Céspedes. Wilmer Flores lined out to Zimmerman. Frazier struck out. Doolittle earns his third save.

Final score: the Nats 5, the Mets 2.

The Nats win the series, now go for the sweep on Wednesday night.
