Hays remains out of Orioles' lineup

The Orioles will try today to move five games above .500 for the first time since June 7, 2017, also against the Pirates, who remain in town through the weekend. They’re 1 ½ back for the last wild card spot and two behind the Rays for third place.

Last night’s 1-0 win bumped the Orioles’ run differential to plus-eight.

The Orioles lead the majors with four 1-0 victories, their highest total since 1983, their last championship team.

The pitching staff has allowed three runs or fewer in five consecutive games, their second-longest streak of the season.

Austin Voth has posted a 2.84 ERA in 11 games with the Orioles, and today marks his eighth start. He retired all six Pirates batters he faced in an April 15 relief appearance for the Nationals – his only career game against them.

Austin Hays remains out with soreness in his oblique, which keeps Brett Phillips in left field.

Terrin Vavra keeps reaching base – four more times last night – which keeps him as the designated hitter. He’s batting fifth behind first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.

Anthony Santander extended his hitting streak to 15 games last night, three short of his career high. He’s slashing .367/.424/.667 (22-for-60) with six doubles, four home runs, 13 RBIS and 10 runs scored since July 16.

Félix Bautista threw 17 pitches that registered 100 mph or higher last night, the most by an Oriole in the Statcast era (since 2015). He became the second major league reliever with that many in a game this season, joining the Cardinals’ Jordan Hicks, who’s done it twice.

The Pirates are 43-63 overall and 19-34 on the road. They lead the majors with 65 games decided by two runs or fewer. Thirty of their last 39 losses since May 23 have been by two runs or less.

They were shut out for the 10^th time this season.

Right-hander JT Brubaker, a sixth-round draft pick in 2015 out of the University of Akron, is 2-9 with a 4.40 ERA and 1.486 WHIP in 20 starts. He’s struck out 105 batters in 104 1/3 innings.

Brubaker followed back-to-back quality starts last month by allowing seven runs and 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Phillies.
