Hearing from Showalter and Hammel after blowout loss

Jason Hammel has spoiled us with his dominance this season. He brought a streak of 19 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run into tonight's game, and left after giving up eight runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings for his shortest outing of the season. The eight runs tied his career high set on July 23, 2011 against the Diamondbacks. "There haven't been many people pitching better than Hamm and he gets a mulligan," said manager Buck Showalter. "Obviously, you've got to give (the Angels) credit. They're swinging the bats pretty well, at least they have been these two games. Every mistake we made, they were on. "He had pretty crisp stuff. Just one of those nights where nothing seemed to go his way. We didn't help him defensively, either. "They're a good team. They've obviously got some people who can hit the ball out of the park. They have a lot of guys who put it in play and put a lot of pressure on you. It's as much their good offense and us making mistakes and them making us pay for it. And then compounding it by not doing some things defensively we need to do." The Orioles have scored two runs or fewer in seven of their last nine games. "I'll dwell on some of the positives. I can do that," Showalter said. "J.J. (Hardy) had some great at-bats tonight. He hit two balls tonight most center fielders don't catch. (Wilson) Betemit had three hits. Very quietly he is up over .260. (Troy) Patton threw the ball well. (Dana) Eveland got back. Flew all day. For the most part had some travel problems, but got two innings and we kept him at 20 (pitches) or under, which we had hoped to do. And got (Matt) Lindstrom off the schneid, so to speak, and got him back out there. "I'm not going to get into that woe is me. We'll regroup and be ready to play tomorrow. We haven't had many of these. We had a couple tough games here and I know our guys will respond." Hammel will need to regroup. "Good hitting ballclub," he said. "Not necessarily power, but just putting it in play. They're going to put the bat on the ball and put it in play somewhere, and that's what happened tonight. "It's going to sit with me for about 24 hours. I'll get some sleep, but obviously I'm not too happy about it. Overall, I didn't set the tone very well and I wasn't able to pitch inside, and just the command of the fastball. And obviously it taxed the bullpen, too. Overall, just a crappy night."
