Hearing from Wieters and Chen

BOSTON - It appears as though Wei-Yin Chen doesn't need to be pampered. He worked on regular rest tonight and turned in arguably his best start of the year. "He was good," said catcher Matt Wieters. "He pitched out of two jams where he really was able to keep them to one run (or less) and the rest of the inning he knew what he wanted to do. He used all of his pitches today. He was able to put guys away with his off-speed and his fastball today." Chen stranded two runners in scoring position in the seventh to maintain a one-run lead. "It's nothing I haven't seen before," he said. "He's been like that pretty much the whole time he's been here. Whatever the situation is, he's not going to get too overwhelmed with it. He's a guy who every time he goes out there is the model of consistency. He'll go out there and nothing is going to get him too excited." The Orioles have won seven in a row at Fenway Park for the first time in modern history, but to Wieters, it only means "we've got a game tomorrow and we'll try to make it eight straight." "You can't worry about those types of numbers," he said. "It's something where the media can write the numbers and it's nice for all the fans. But once you start getting into the numbers, you forget about what you're really here to do, and that's to win ballgames." Josh Beckett lost a duel and refused to speak with reporters when it was over. "It's big because Beckett had great stuff tonight," Wieters said. "He was as good as I've seen him since I've been facing him. Anytime you can beat a guy that goes out there with that good of stuff, especially a pitcher like Beckett who can shut you down, to be able to get those two runs that inning, it's great to make it stand up." Chen won for the first time since May 15 against the Yankees. "First of all, I haven't had a win for a long time and it was a relief to me," he said through his interpreter. "I was able to get a win because of my teammates. We had really good defense tonight." Showalter stuck with Chen in the seventh and let him fight his way out of that jam. "I'm really appreciative that Buck trusted me," Chen said. "That is really important to me. That is a key point for me." Asked what made him so effective, Chen replied, "The most important thing I got was the first strike. And I still want to thank my teammates, Mark (Reynolds) and (Wilson Betemit). "When you play against the Red Sox, they are a really good team. And I only allowed one earned run. That was a really good part of tonight." As for facing Beckett, Chen said, "It was definitely a good game tonight. Competing with him was a big challenge for me. I learned a lot from him tonight." Pedro Strop hasn't allowed a run against the Red Sox in 11 1/3 innings over 10 games, dating back to April 2, 2011 with the Rangers. Adam Jones went hitless for only the second time in his last 26 games. Endy Chavez improved to 11-for-30 (.367) with two triples and three RBIs lifetime against Beckett. Robert Andino has a hit in 12 of his last 15 games against Boston. He's batting .381 (8-for-21) with two homers and 12 RBIs with RISP against the Red Sox over the past two seasons. The Orioles are 17-14 vs. the American League East this season. They improved to 8-16 when scoring fewer than four runs.
