Hendrickson will return to 40-man roster (and more notes)

I have a few notes to pass along from manager Buck Showalter's pregame session with the media, beginning with news on left-hander Mark Hendrickson. The Orioles placed Hendrickson on optional waivers today, the same procedure that Troy Patton went through earlier this summer. As I explained back then, it takes two business days to clear and no team will claim him. It's sort of a gentleman's agreement. Happens all the time in baseball. Hendrickson came off the 40-man roster to make room for Patton, but he'll go back on it. The Orioles will be over the limit, but they're in the process of removing at least one player. Manager Buck Showalter hinted that it could be as many as two. An announcement should come tomorrow. Let the speculation begin. Could it be another DFA situation? Is there a trade in the works? Stay tuned. Hendrickson becomes a serious candidate to be recalled when rosters expand on Thursday. The Orioles aren't expected to promote anyone from Double-A Bowie, at least while the Baysox are competing for a playoff spot. Also, Patton must return to Houston on Sept. 22 for a hearing related to his DWI arrest over the winter. This situation isn't behind him. First baseman Chris Davis (shoulder) threw today and took 25 swings off a tee in his first baseball activity since going on the disabled list. He made it through the session pain-free. Infielder Cesar Izturis (groin) is expected to join an affiliate on Friday to begin a brief injury-rehab assignment. Outfielder Luke Scott will undergo LASIK eye surgery tomorrow afternoon. More notes: The Orioles are expected to clear two spots on their 40-man roster tomorrow, creating room for Hendrickson and a non-roster player from Triple-A Norfolk. Pitchers Rick VandenHurk and Jeremy Accardo are two possibilities to have their contracts purchased. I don't like to speculate, but Tides pitcher Mitch Atkins remains a candidate to be designated for assignment tomorrow. First-round pick Dylan Bundy will meet with reporters tomorrow and be introduced to the Camden Yards crowd. LJ Hoes, Joe Mahoney, Xavier Avery, Sean Gleason, Chorye Spoone and Brian Ward are on the Mesa roster in the Arizona Fall League. Hoes' name is omitted, but he's part of the team. Also, the Orioles will send two other pitchers, but their names will be announced later. Patton expects to miss only the Sept. 22 game when he returns to Houston. Former Orioles pitcher Adam Loewen is batting .307 with 44 doubles, three triples, 16 homers and 81 RBIs in 127 games with Las Vegas, the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate. Wouldn't it be interesting if the Blue Jays purchased his contract on Thursday and brought him back to Camden Yards? Is "interesting" the right word?
