Hill, Suero, Lee, McGowin and Soto look to make splash in big league camp

Three top Nationals prospects were invited to big league camp, which starts this week, including the Nats' top pitching prospect.

I have written a good amount on Erick Fedde, Drew Ward and Andrew Stevenson.

Here is a closer look five other non-roster invitees to Nats camp:

RHP Taylor Hill

6-foot-3, 230 lbs.
Nashville, Tenn.
Vanderbilt

Hill has made nine appearances and pitched 21 innings in the big leagues with the Nats from 2014-2015, including one start. He has made 74 appearances in his last three seasons at Triple-A Syracuse and has a 40-48 record with a 3.99 ERA with 253 strikeouts. His 154 2/3 innings last season was second only to Austin Voth (157) for the Chiefs.

RHP Kyle McGowin

Acquired in trade with Angels for Danny Espinosa ( December 2016)

McGowin made 27 starts between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He got within two outs of a seven-inning no-hitter for Double-A Arkansas last April. Later in the season, McGowin tossed six scoreless innings for Triple-A Salt Lake against Omaha. He credited his changeup for the extra boost he needed to get batters out in that start.

RHP Wander Suero

Suero spent his 2016 season with Double-A Harrisburg and was outstanding, going 3-0 with a 2.44 ERA in 39 games. Suero struck out 48 in 55 1/3 innings with 21 walks. He notched four saves in seven attempts.

LHP Nick Lee

Weatherford (Texas) Junior College

Lee had a tremendous Arizona Fall League, appearing in 10 games and notching a 1.54 ERA. He tossed 11 2/3 innings, allowing only two earned runs (four runs overall) while striking out 14 and walking 10. At Double-A Harrisburg, Lee went 3-1 with two saves and a 4.32 ERA in 45 games. He struck out 55 and walked 42 over 50 innings.

1B Neftali Soto

6-foot-1 210 lbs.
Manati, Puerto Rico

Soto played well for Cangrejeros de Santurce in the Puerto Rican Winter League. In 38 games, Soto hit .279 with eight doubles, four homers and 13 RBIs while striking out only 28 times. Soto played 122 games at Harrisburg and Syracuse this past season. He hit .274 with 27 doubles, two triples, 10 homers and 62 RBIs. Soto his a three-run shot and a grand slam in one game for Harrisburg in a 14-3 win over Erie in July. He played 27 games for the Reds in 2013-2014 and also spent time with the Chicago White Sox.
