Home run derby breaks out early (Nats fall 10-3)

It's been home run derby to begin Saturday's matchup between the Nationals and Diamondbacks.

Arizona's Ketel Marte took the first pitch of the game from Stephen Strasburg over the left-center field wall for his 18th homer of the season. Later in the first inning, Adam Jones smacked his 13th of the season, a solo shot for a 2-0 lead.

Trea Turner legged out a leadoff triple and Adam Eaton brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center field. Later in the inning, Juan Soto (No. 11) and Matt Adams (No. 7) crushed solo shots for a 3-2 Nationals lead.

In the second, the D-backs continued to swing the bat well against Strasburg. Christian Walker led off with a solo homer and Nick Ahmed followed with a triple. Carson Kelly's RBI single scored Ahmed for a 4-3 lead

In the third, the D-backs added to their lead with three more base hits: singles by Eduardo Escobar and Walker and a RBI double from Ahmed.

Mid-third, the D-backs lead the Nats 5-3.

Update: Marte launched his second homer of the game to lead off the fourth inning. The D-backs had nine hits on the board through four frames. Strasburg has allowed more than eight hits for the first time since Aug. 17, 2016, a span of 65 consecutive starts.

Mid-fifth, the D-backs lead the Nats 6-3.

Update II: Strasburg allowed four homers for the first time since Aug. 8, 2014 against the Braves. He allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings, with one intentional walk and five strikeouts.

After five innings, the D-backs lead the Nats 6-3.

Update III: Kevin Cron hit a two-run homer off Kyle Barraclough and David Peralta added a run-scoring double against Tony Sipp in the eighth. In the ninth, Trevor Rosenthal surrendered two walks, a single and an RBI sacrifice flyout by Kelly to add another run to the D-backs ledger.

Update IV: The Nats got a single by Yan Gomes in the ninth but could not score.

Final score: Diamondbacks 10, Nats 3.
