Hyde on Broxton, center field, bench and more

The removal of Keon Broxton from the roster this morning has left center field available to Anthony Santander and Stevie Wilkerson.

A corner outfielder and an infielder are going to share the position.

Santander is making his fifth start today and Wilkerson has made 32. They're newbies learning on the fly ball.

"Both guys have done a nice job out there when they've had the opportunity and continue to play out there," said manager Brandon Hyde.

The Orioles cut ties with Broxton after he batted .204/.261/.350 (21-for-103) with three doubles, four home runs, nine RBIs and 49 strikeouts in 112 plate appearances over 37 games. He homered in Colorado on the first pitch thrown to him after the trade, but making contact became a serious issue and negated the defensive edge he provided.

"I hate to see Keon go," Hyde said. "Obviously, he was such a weapon defensively and on the bases. I'm sure he'll get picked up by somebody, especially somebody that needs outfield defense and baserunning for the postseason. So wish Keon the best.

"He swung the bat good in Colorado when he first got to us and just kind of had a tough time getting going. I can't put my finger on it, if he put too much on himself or what it may be, but it just wasn't happening offensively and hoping he gets another opportunity somewhere and takes advantage of it."

Branden Kline was recalled again and is set to make his first appearance since facing three batters at Tropicana Field on July 1 and taking the loss after surrendering Kevin Kiermaier's three-run homer.

In his last outing with Norfolk, Kline allowed three runs and three hits with a home run in 1 1/3 innings on Thursday. He also walked two batters.

The Orioles have an extra reliever in their bullpen, but Tanner Scott and Jimmy Yacabonis aren't available today.

"We needed a reliever here today and we didn't want to send any of those guys out," Hyde said, "so that was just the decision we made."

Being short a bench player isn't as much of a handicap with the Orioles playing in National League ballparks in two of the next three series. There's no designated hitter.

"Four bench guys in the National League," Hyde said.

"You like to have as many bench guys as you possibly can, but we can't do that on the mound. We had Wilkerson throw two innings last night. We're not in the position to be counting on our starters going seven innings every time out, so we need relievers. And Branden Kline is here."

Pedro Severino is starting behind the plate for the first time since last Sunday, with an illness keeping him on the bench. Chance Sisco caught the last two games in the intense heat.

The weather really wasn't a factor today.

"I don't like to play a catcher a day after a night game if it's cold," Hyde said. "(Sisco) wore it the last two nights. Needed Severino to catch today."

Dylan Bundy remains the starter for Tuesday night in Arizona after recovering from his right knee tendinitis.

The Orioles are facing former teammate Andrew Cashner today.

"It's going to be a little different," Hyde said. "It's going to be hot. I was just outside and standing here right now and I'm sweating profusely. I think Cash, everybody loves Cash in that clubhouse and like he's going to try to beat us, we're going to try to do the same to him.

"It's a friendly rivalry right now."
