Hyde, Peterson revisit call at home (O's down 7-4)

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said today that he hasn't heard from the commissioner's office in New York after his comments last night regarding the failure, upon his challenge, to reverse the out call on Jace Peterson at home plate.

The denial of the go-ahead run on a double steal infuriated Hyde and his players. And their moods didn't improve when the Yankees responded with three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

Hyde used "a joke" and "absolutely pathetic" to describe the call and how it stood after a 1-minute-and-30-second review. He also said later that it was "a really terrible decision."

Asked if he got any reaction from New York, Hyde said, "No, no."

"I'm going to be honest and it is what it is. But I haven't heard anything."

Peterson assumed that the call would be reversed based on the tag and reactions on both teams.

"I was surprised and I think some of their guys were, too. They came back on the field and acted like it was going to be overturned," he said.

"I know it's a close play, but from the video replay that we get to see on the board, I think everyone thought it would be overturned, and it wasn't. Unfortunate, but that's just part of the game and the way it's going. Nothing you can really do about it now. Just move on to the next play and keep it going.

"Once I took off, I saw (Austin) Romine catch the ball and the ball was there, so I just tried to do my best to get my foot down on the plate as fast as I could. I felt like my foot was on the plate and then he tagged me a little bit above my leg. Almost in the hip area, back of the thigh.

"From the replay I thought I was safe, but obviously, they saw it different."

The Orioles expanded their bench to three players by recalling outfielder DJ Stewart from Triple-A Norfolk. He's in left field tonight and will work into the rotation of players.

"We were playing short, position player-wise, and I think DJ gives us another player," Hyde said. "We're pretty beat up offensively. We have a lot of nagging things with a lot of our guys playing through stuff. (Stevie) Wilkerson and (Hanser) Alberto probably shouldn't have played that next day, but we were running out of bodies a little bit. So DJ's here and he's going to get a lot of playing time.

"He was playing well before he got hurt. Looking forward to adding him to the roster."

The task is to give him an ample amount of at-bats while also keeping others engaged.

"I'm going to rotate those guys," Hyde said. "They're all going to play. It's that time of year where guys need breaks and rest, and I haven't rested many people, so DJ's going to get a lot of playing time."

Stewart will "mainly" play the outfield corners, Hyde said.

The Orioles are going to be more focused on youth as the season progresses, but Chris Davis' exclusion from tonight's lineup is based more on Hyde anticipating a left-hander following Jonathan Holder tonight.

The Yankees bullpen includes former Orioles Rule 5 pick Nestor Cortes Jr. and former Orioles minor leaguer Stephen Tarpley.

"I'm just trying to put together (what is) for me the best lineup to give us a chance to win tonight," Hyde said. "Jonathan Holder's a reverse guy and I'm going to go on the assumption that they're going to throw a lefty or two after him. I don't know for sure, but two of the lefties who are in their 'pen are guys that have given them length.

"It's one of those days where I don't know who they're going to throw, exactly, but taking my best guess, and that's why it's mostly a right-handed lineup."

Reliever Miguel Castro is available tonight after recovering from a lengthy illness that Hyde described as "flu-like symptoms." Sore throat, headache, aches and pains "and some other things that I don't know the words for," Hyde said.

"Feeling a lot better. Unavailable last night because he hadn't thrown in five days. He finally yesterday played catch and got on the mound a little bit. Got his blood going, got some activity."

Outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. won't come off the injured list Friday when eligible, and he's expected to begin an injury rehab assignment next week.

"I think he's improving. He's just not going to be ready when the 10 days are up," Hyde said.

"Probably going to have to play in some games and we'll make a decision from there. But I think when we go on the road, I'd assume at that point he'll go and play some games. Hopefully, if everything works out in the rehab process, play a few games and, hopefully, be back up here."

A storm arrived at Camden Yards, cutting short batting practice and requiring the tarp to be unrolled. It's coming down pretty hard.

Update: Mike Tauchman and DJ LeMahieu hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Tauchman hit two last night.

Didi Gregorius homered with one out for a 3-0 lead, his ball landing on Eutaw Street.

Update II: Jonathan Villar tripled to score Richie Martin in the third and he came home on Trey Mancini's ground ball to cut the lead to 3-2.

Update III: The Yankees took a 5-2 lead in the fourth on Austin Romine's two-run double.

Update IV: Anthony Santander's two-run homer in the fifth reduced the lead to 5-4.

Update V: Romine homered off Tayler Scott in the sixth for a 6-4 lead.

Update VI: Doubles by Romine and Tauchman off Richard Bleier in the eighth left the Orioles trailing 7-4.
