Hyun Soo Kim reacts to Pagan's sentencing (O's down 4-0)

TORONTO - Orioles outfielder Hyun Soo Kim was back in the spotlight today - and not for the right reason. The man that threw a beer can at him last October from the Rogers Centre left field stands was sentenced in Toronto this morning.

For throwing that can that just missed hitting Kim as was making a catch in deep left, Ken Pagan was given 12 months of probation and 200 hours of community service while being banned from Major League Baseball games for a year. During that time, he cannot go within 500 meters of Rogers Centre.

Kim provided his reaction today to that sentence for Pagan.

kim-toronto-gray.jpg"I just feel appreciated and I think it's a good thing," he said through interpreter Derrick Chung. "They took a very quick action on this matter. I just felt like it was not something I will have to worry about.

"Just the fact that he got punished for what he did, I think that was enough. I think I am sure that will make people think twice before doing something like that again."

Kim said it was his understanding it was just a coincidence that this sentencing came while the Orioles were back in town. But several Toronto reporters that have been following the story, along with a few from Baltimore, sought Kim's reaction today.

Kim said Pagan reached out to him through a letter earlier today.

"Yes, I got the letter and I read it and I definitely accept his apology," Kim said. "People make mistakes, so I'm sure it's not going to happen again. I appreciate it."

Kim said the issue has not been a topic of conversation in the clubhouse and he doesn't think all Toronto fans should get a bad rap because of the actions of one.

"We haven't really talked about it too much," he said. "They took a very quick action on it, like I said before, and it was just a mistake, and like I said, I feel very appreciative about how they reacted on this."

Pagan, a former newspaper copy editor, lost his job and, according to the judge, "has suffered humiliation and harassment as a result of this incident."

O's fall behind: The Orioles trailed 1-0 in the third inning tonight. Toronto's José Bautista hit a solo homer to right off Wade Miley to lead off the home first. He got a curveball that stayed up and produced his 14th home run.

Toronto adds to lead: The Blue Jays expanded their lead to 4-0, scoring three in the fourth. It started with Justin Smoak's leadoff blast to center. His 21st homer - a new career high - made it 2-0.

Toronto later loaded the bases, but the Orioles almost got out of it. Bautista hit a ball hard up the middle, but shortstop Paul Janish dove and knocked it down. His toss to Jonathan Schoop to get a force at second was late as a run scored. Schoop's throw to first bounced to the outfield side of of the bag as a second run scored. The Orioles are down 4-0 and have been held to three hits through five innings by Marcus Stroman.
