Orioles manager Buck Showalter said starting Hyun Soo Kim in left field against Boston lefty David Price was his best option for this evening's lineup.
Kim has had few chances against left-handers this year, but is 0-for-14 with three walks and two strikeouts. Tonight, he'll make his second start of the year with a lefty facing the Orioles. He started against Mariners lefty Wade LeBlanc on July 1 at Safeco Field, going 0-for-3.
"This is just another game," Kim said through interpreter Danny Lee this afternoon. "It doesn't really matter if it is a lefty or a righty. I will treat it the same way. And the main focus is for us to win, and I'll do anything I can do in order for the team to win.
"I have seen a lot of videos and tried to prepare in that way. I know I have not been successful against lefties this year. But regardless of the result this year, I will try my best to make it better."
Nolan Reimold got the start in left for the Orioles last night. Not only is Reimold hitting just .190 versus lefty pitching this year, but he has just one hit his last 19 at-bats since July 31.
Kim hit over .300 off lefties the past three years in the Korean Baseball Organization, but he said how southpaws attack hitters is different in the major leagues.
"In Korean baseball, the lefties don't really throw changeups or forkballs to lefties, Kim said. "But here, they do. That is a main difference, so I have to treat them just like the righties when up at bat. I am very aware that David Price is a great pitcher. But all the pitchers I have faced so far are also great pitchers. So it doesn't really matter who that pitcher is, I just have to remain myself and face them just as usual."
Kim is 5-for-12 with a pair of doubles over his last three games. On the year, he is batting .321/.401/.435 in 62 games and 209 at-bats.
A reporter asked him today how he is holding up in heat of a Baltimore summer.
"The Korean August heat is as bad as this one, so I am used to it. But coming back from San Francisco, where it was cold, is giving me a harder time," he said with a laugh.
