Improbable win: O's use late homer barrage for latest comeback victory

You don't often see a team win a game where it makes three errors, strikes out 15 times, leaves the bases loaded twice, goes 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position through the first nine innings and trails by three runs with six outs to go. But the Orioles scored nine unanswered runs over their last three at-bats last night to storm back and win 10-4 in 10 innings at Chicago. Here is a stat for you: In their three wins on this road trip, the Orioles have outscored opponents 15-0 from the eighth inning on and have hit seven homers over seven innings. Yes, very impressive. Here are some other stats and notes from an amazing O's win: * The Orioles went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position through the first nine innings. At that point they were 1-for-20 with RISP since Saturday's game. Then they went 5-for-7 with RISP in the 10th inning. * Nolan Reimold hit his third ninth-inning homer of the year. Over his past three games, he is 7-for-13 with two doubles, three homers, five RBIs and six runs. He didn't even start Monday's game, but sure had a big impact on it. * When batting in the ninth inning this year, Reimold is 5-for-6 with a double, three homers, four RBIs and an OPS of 3.333. Let that sink in for a minute. * Adam Jones' homer with two outs in the top of the ninth was probably his biggest hit as an Oriole. It came at time when some fans were doubting Jones' ability to deliver in the clutch. Jones has three homers over his last four games and 17 at-bats, and is 7-for-17 on this road trip. * Chris Davis is 8-for-12 over his past three games with three doubles, a homer and three RBIs, lifting his average from .211 to .387. * Matt Wieters picked a good time to give the Orioles their first homer of the year with more than one runner on base. The team had hit 17 homers on the year (14 solo shots and three two-run shots) when Wieters hit that grand slam in the 10th to blow the game open. Wieters' solo homer in the eighth started the Orioles comeback from a 4-1 deficit. He matched his career highs with two homers and five RBIs. * In their three wins on this road trip, the Orioles are batting .291 as a team, scoring 23 runs on six doubles and 10 homers. As pointed out earlier in this story, 15 of those 23 runs were scored in the eighth inning or later. No doubt, the Orioles have shown a lot of character with three comeback wins on this road trip. Jones and Wieters look like players that will take their games to a higher level this year. Sure, the defense has been shaky and we are just a day removed from the Kevin Gregg outing in Toronto. But for now, maybe the long-suffering O's fans should just enjoy a 6-4 start where the team has shown some spunk. Who knows what the next 152 will hold, but the fans should take some time today to enjoy last night and a good start. Makes you wonder what might come next.
